This is a member of the Panthera Leo Senegalensis subspecies of lion. It ranges from Senegal to Nigeria.

This may in fact be a male lion. The male lions in Pendjari do not have manes at all - the guide books said so, but when I saw a big male (I looked underneath) he had absolutely no male - just bulkier than the females. This is probably an adaptation to the habitat - tangled bushes etc.

Lions live for around 10–14 years in the wild, while in captivity they can live over 20 years. In the wild, males seldom live longer than ten years, as injuries sustained from continuous fighting with rival males greatly reduces their longevity.[5] They typically inhabit savanna and grassland, although they may take to bush and forest. Lions are unusually social compared to other cats. A pride of lions consists of related females and offspring and a small number of adult males. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. Lions are apex and keystone predators, although they will scavenge if the opportunity arises. While lions do not typically hunt humans selectively, some have been known to become man-eaters and seek human prey.

Hi James

Very interesting notes MF. I never knew about this subspecies. Wow, the endlessness
of nature's ability to adapt. You dealt well with the late afternoon light coming from the
left with the potential to cast heavy shadows on the face of the lion and creating a big
difference in contrast with the highlighted areas on the animals shoulder and neck. But,
you coped excellently to maintain a balance in the exposure. Nice sharp details too.

Dear James
Very interesting reading about this lion that looks like a female but could in fact be a male. I made a big boo-boo yesterday when I critiqued a new member and mentioned the pretty lionesses and after all it was males. Never the less, the profile from the side gives the opportunity to see the extent of this lion’s strong facial structure and also show the size of the head to the shoulders. Details captured are sharp, especially the whiskers, both above the eyes and around the nose. All the whites in the image is lovely as it looks so clear as if it has been cleanly washed. A great image with much more qualities to appreciate than that t I have just mentioned. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
