We see this heron on out boat tour to the village of Ganvie

Ganvie is a lake village in Benin, lying in Lake Nokoué, near Cotonou. With a population of around 20,000 people, it is probably the largest lake village in Africa and as such is very popular with tourists. The village was established in the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries by the Tofinu people, established on the lake because the Dan-Homey's religion forbade the Fon warriors from entering water, therefore the lagoon was a safe territory for other tribes. Originally based on farming, the village's main industries other than tourism are now fishing and fish farming.

The village was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on October 31st, 1996 in the Cultural category
The herons are wading birds in the Ardeidae family. Some are called egrets or bitterns instead of herons. Within the family, all members of the genera Botaurus and Ixobrychus are referred to as bitterns, and - including the Zigzag Heron or Zigzag Bittern - are a monophyletic group within the Ardeidae. However, egrets are not a biologically distinct group from the herons, and tend to be named differently because they are mainly white and/or have decorative plumes. Although egrets have the same build as the larger herons, they tend to be smaller.

The classification of the individual heron/egret species is fraught with difficulty, and there is still no clear consensus about the correct placement of many species into either of the two major genera, Ardea and Egretta. Similarly, the relationship of the genera in the family is not completely resolved. However, one species formerly considered to constitute a separate monotypic family Cochlearidae, the Boat-billed Heron, is now regarded as a member of the Ardeidae.

Although herons resemble birds in some other families, such as the storks, ibises and spoonbills, they differ from these in flying with their necks retracted, not outstretched. They are also one of the bird groups that have powder down.

Some members of this group nest colonially in trees, others, notably the bitterns, use reedbeds (wikipedia)

I like this cute shot so much. Pictured scene is very impressive. You have captured elegant heron at so attractive moment. I like wonderful DOF, excellent sharpness of the FG and main subject and nice blurriness of the remote vegetation. My compliments and TFS.

Sehr originelles und feines Bild, das Du am Nakoué-See aufgenommen hast. Dies scheint auch das erste Bild aus Benin auf TN zu sein! Danke auch für den Beglettext, ist für solche Orte sehr "helpful".
Schöne dezentrierte Komposition einen sehr beschäftigten Reiher zeigend. Mir gefallen die subtilen grau-blau Töne des Bildes auch sehr.
