Hello dear TN Friends,
A few days ago I placed a photo of a Gelada Baboon male. Now a portrait with a lot of expression.
Most of the time it was very misty, but this photo was taken when it was clear for a moment.
We could come very close to the baboons. They eat their grass and don’t mind our presence at all. They don’t look…, but they are very peaceful. (from a distance).

A summary: Gelada Baboon, theropithecus gelada
Geladas are not actually true baboons, and differ by having nostrils that are a further distance from the tip of the muzzle than other baboons.

Subspecies
Possibly two or three. T.g.gelada (Northern), P.g.obscurus (Southern).

Life span
Gelada baboons have a lifespan of over 19 years.

Statistics
Body length: 50-74cm, Tail length: 32-40cm, Weight: 11-20kg.

Physical description
Adult male gelada baboons have a long, heavy dark cape. Both genders have an hourglass-shaped area of bright pink skin on the neck and chest, which is indicative of fertility.

Distribution
Gelada baboons inhabit Ethiopia.

Habitat
They live on mountain grassland with no tall trees, and are restricted to altitudes of 1400-4400m.

Diet
This species feeds almost exclusively on grass.

Behaviour
Gelada baboons live in multi-male, multi-female groups, which can sometimes have as many as 600 members. In these large groups, bands of 50-300 tend to forage together, regrouping at night. They are diurnal and terrestrial. During the night, geladas sleep on treeless cliffs, away from predators.

Reproduction
After a gestation period of 150-180 days, females give birth to one infant.

Hi Peter,

I was hoping for a close-up of the Gelada Baboon's face and here it is! What a fantastic face with the mass of fur surrounding it. The eyes, wrinkles, nose and mouth are superb. I think he could use a dentist. Wonderful natural colors, fine details, and a marvelous diagonal position of his face.

A nice portrait capture of this beautiful Baboon. Very well composed with sharp details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hallo Peter,

mooi portret opname van deze aap.
Vind vooral de wijze hoe hij zijn gezicht houdt mooi en dan die bek met die paar tanden.
Erg goede details en zoals gewoonlijk een zeer scherpe opname.

Hi Peter

A wonderful shot - the white BG really helps this shot as it focusses attention on the baboon. Stunning pose and detail. Excellent work.

Into my favourites.

Peter, you deserve an award for this amazing portrait of a Gelada Baboon! Goodness gracious, you have captured a very eloquent expression in the eyes of this fellow once again with professional competence.
And what's more, I can count every grey hair (like mine) on the chin of your subject.
Thanks and all the best.

Hallo Peter,
Ik heb deze duidelijk gemist!
Prachtige plaat! Prachtig!!!
Is op zich een reis naar Ethiopië waard.
Expressie troef...de manier waarop ie kijkt en zijn gehele 'smoelwerk'.
Heel goeie crop. Moet niks meer zijn...
Zeer goede focus en scherptediepte. Ben er weg van:-)
Gefeliciteerd en bedankt
Annick

Hello Peter,
I missed this close-up of a male Gelada Baboon. This is a fine sharp portrait in a great pose to show its remarkable face. Strange to think that both we humans and this baboon are primates! Also strange to think that they eat grass with the kind of teeth they have.
TFS this fine and interesting shot,
Ivan

Fantastic expressive face. Great portrait!
regards
Eyal

Hello Peter

I can see the sadness in his or her eyes
Maybe they are more aware than us about
the existence.

However, thanks for sharing

Hello Peter !
Wow, what an expression on this strange face - I love his mouth, and his partially opened mouth ! Looks fantastic ! There are also excellent details on the face and the fur around his face, nice natural colors, very nicely composed, and I also like the white BG, nothing is distracting us from the Gelada. Very well done !
Valerie.
