Hello dear TN Friends,

Before I placed a photo of a Gelada Baboon male. Now a photo of the whole family.
Most of the time it was very foggy, but this photo was taken when it was clear for a moment.
We could come very close to the baboons. They eat their grass and don’t mind our presence at all. They don’t look…, but they are very peaceful. (from a distance).

The Gelada (Theropithecus gelada), sometimes called the Gelada Baboon, is a species of Old World monkey found only in the Ethiopian Highlands, with large populations in the Semien Mountains. Geladas are not actually true baboons, and differ by having nostrils that are a further distance from the tip of the muzzle than other baboons.

Endangered
Although not listed as endangered, only 50,000-60,000 Geladas are known to exist. Hunting and habitat destruction have forced the Gelada into areas formerly inhabited only by the Olive Baboon, and hybridisation between the two species has been observed.

Subspecies
Possibly two or three. T.g.gelada (Northern), P.g.obscurus (Southern).

Life span
Gelada baboons have a lifespan of over 19 years.

Statistics
Body length: 50-74cm, Tail length: 32-40cm, Weight: 11-20kg.

Physical description
Adult male gelada baboons have a long, heavy dark cape. Both genders have an hourglass-shaped area of bright pink skin on the neck and chest, which is indicative of fertility.

Distribution
Gelada baboons inhabit Ethiopia.

Habitat
They live on mountain grassland with no tall trees, and are restricted to altitudes of 1400-4400m.

Diet
This species feeds almost exclusively on grass.

Behaviour
Gelada baboons live in multi-male, multi-female groups, which can sometimes have as many as 600 members. In these large groups, bands of 50-300 tend to forage together, regrouping at night. They are diurnal and terrestrial. During the night, geladas sleep on treeless cliffs, away from predators.

Reproduction
After a gestation period of 150-180 days, females give birth to one infant.

Hi Peter,

Wow! What a wonderful family of Gelada Baboons. It's so good to see them like this in their natural habitat. You captured them beautifully as they go about doing what Geladas do. Excellent colors and fine details of the faces and fur. The one staring at you doesn't look too friendly even though you say they are peaceful. A marvelous post of something most of us will never see for ourselves.

Hi Peter.
Fantastic scene at whole and so amazing shot by quality. I like wonderful main subject - very attractive group of monkeys - which is supplemented by the most impressive BG. All is brilliant: great details and sharpness of the grass and monkeys, fine exposure of the animal images and remote mountains, superb POV and composition of the image. Bravo. Great job.

Hello Peter,
A fine and well composed shot of this Gelada Baboon family, the dominant male looking his role while the rest of the family goes about its business.
Technically a great shot and interesting to view and I thank you for that!
Best regards, Ivan

Hello Peter,
Excellent presentation of this endanger species. We can see them in their natural environement. The dominant male seems to watch on you in order to protect the others. Very nice nature shot. Best regards,
Catherine

This is a great capture of this family grouping, Peter. You managed to get them all in focus. Sharpness, colors, and light all feel very natural to me.

Hello Peter,

What a fine photo you have made! The quality of the image is impresive having a very good sharpnes and an excelent composition. The animals are shown in great details with fine, naturaly looking colors. The fogy weater has been well used as the blurry background enhaces even more the feeling of sharpness main subject is shown with.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Ciao Peter,
bellissimo momento di cattura di questo gruppo familiare, splendida composizione con il solo capo branco che sorveglia e difende il suo territorio in una bella ambientazione naturale, ottima nitidezza.

Hello Peter,
Very nice and peaceful family! Looks like paradise here. The fact that we don't see their faces from too close, makes them look harmless and friendly. Excellent composition and choice of point of view.
Thanks for this special picture

Hi Peter

An amazing view of this Gelada Baboon family!
I've seen a documentary on them once and this looks exactly like that - the whole family, their peacefulness and their surroundings.
The details are terrific here, the different poses are excellent and the look on that big male's face is impressive.
Wonderful colors everywhere and excellent control of the exposure.

Bravo and TFS
