Next to a monastery in Aksum, in the North of Ethiopia, I saw this agapornis in a group of 8-10 birds.

Again a new species for TN: The Abyssinian Lovebird (Agapornis taranta) also known as Black-winged Lovebird is a mainly green bird of the parrot family.

They are endemic to Ethiopia and a small area in the South of Eritrea.

At about 16.5 cm (6.5 inches) long, it is the largest of the lovebird genus, a group of small parrots. The adult male is easily identified by it red forehead, and the adult female by its all green head.

Description
The Abyssinian Lovebird is sexually dimorphic, as are the Red-headed Lovebird and Grey-headed Lovebird of the lovebird genus. The dimorphism becomes apparent in juvenile birds after their first moult at about eight or nine months of age.
Both the male and female Abyssinian Lovebird are mostly green, and only the adult male Abyssinian Lovebird has a red forehead and a ring of red feathers around its eyes.
The tail is black tipped and feathers below the tail show a yellowish colour. The rump and feathers above the tail are light green. In the male feathers under the wing are typically black, and in the female the feathers under the wing are typically greenish or brownish black. Both sexes have a red beak and gray feet.

Habitat
The natural habitat for an Abyssinian Lovebird is typically from southern Eritrea to southwestern Ethiopia and they normally live in either high plains or mountainous regions.

Behaviour
Food and feeding
Sunflower seeds, corn, apples and mission figs are typical of an Abyssinian Lovebird diet.
Breeding
The Abyssinian Lovebird nests in a tree cavity. The eggs are white and there are usually three or four eggs in a clutch. The female incubates the eggs for 23 days, and the chicks fledge from the nest about 45 days after hatching.

Status
Widespread and a common species throughout its habitat range, the Abyssinian Lovebird is evaluated as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Usually in flocks of 5-10 birds.

Aviculture
In aviculture the Abyssinian Lovebird has not become well established as a breeding bird, although it can tolerate cold weather. Breeding in aviculture is on a small scale, so it is an uncommon pet.

Hi Peter.
Nice shot with impressive diagonal composition and so attractive main hero. You have represented this beautiful bird perfectly. I think it was so glad to pose you. Eye-contact is fine. Difficult for reproduction BG is great too. Lights and colours also are spot on. My kind regards and TFS.
Alexei.

Peter,

Looks like one happy bird! I love the contrast between the bird's plumage and the surroundings. Very nicely done.

Best Regards,

Hi Peter
Perfect action shot.Good pose for this parrot.
Regards Jiri.

Hi Peter,
Nice color and exposure, and I like the low POV.
The bird seems to be moving here, so 1/60th was not quite enough for this type of shot. Also, the photo would benefit from a bit more space front, less top IMHO.
TFS,
Howard

Hello Peter,
I love seeing parrots in the wild, something special about them when we see them mostly as cagebirds.
This is a great capture of a Black-winged Lovebird, another one I missed when we were away. The POV and pose are excellent and the composition ov the log is superb, where it is well seen with all its features against a fine neutral BG.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Kind regards,
Ivan
