Gelada at Dusk
|[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note|
|An adult male gelada (Theropithecus gelada) at sunset in the Ethiopian Highlands.|
The last extant species of a once widespread primate genus, geladas' closest relatives are baboons, however this species is highly specialized and lives only in or around alpine grasslands in Ethiopia. Their diet consists almost exclusively of grass, herbs, and their associated roots.
Like many specialists, the gelada is threatened by ever diminishing habitat loss and fragmentation. Also, because they depend on high altitude (~3,500m in this population) vegetation communities, climate change poses a particularly potent threat to this species and other endemics that live in the highlands.
