A photo of these fighting Sparrows on the airport of Lalibela, Ethiopia. It is the third photo of these fighting birds I post here. After a while they flew away and continue their fight on another place of the airport out of reach of my camera.

These are Swainson’s Sparrows, passer swainsonii, ENDEMIC to the highlands of Ethiopia, Eritrea and N. Somalia.

It is often considered a race of Grey-headed Sparrow. This sparrow was named after the English ornithologist William Swainson.

This Sparrow is 14 – 16 cm. Darker than Northern Grey-headed Sparrow, especially on head and throat; pale chestnut tail and rump contrast more strongly with back. Smaller and more compact than Parrot-billed Sparrow and much smaller bill. Range does not overlap with the former Sparrows and Swahili Sparrow.

Habitat: Dry wooded grasslands, farmlands and villages; the common Sparrow in Ethiopian towns.

Status: Common to abundant in some areas.

Voice: Typical chips, cheroops and chissiks.

Hello Peter,
I must admit when I first looked at the thumbnail image I thought it was a bird that had been hit on the road. What a surprise to see that it is actually two birds entangled in a fight.
You captured this unique image at just the right moment and have frozen it for all to enjoy viewing. Great stop action showing excellent detail and beautiful natural coloration. well done!!
Ron

great scene and moment Peter!

Hello Peter,
A fine capture of an even more twisted fighting position than your previous postings of Swainson's Sparrows. The POV shows the tangle well with good clarity and natural colours against a neutral BG in a balanced composition.
Thanks and kind regards,
Ivan

Hello Peter.
It is really hard for me to figure out the feature of the sparrow because the fighting must be intense.
The capture is well timed and you have done it with beautiful sharp details.
Thanks and kind regards - Jusni

Hello Peter,
I thought cat fights got ugly they have nothing on this scrap. The beak toe hold is being applied. Great action shot Peter, an excellent wildlife image.

PS. Is that his penis he has in his beak?

I agreed that this is a different presentation but it does reflect the bad side of natural life that exist. In regard of the thecnichal aspect this image is excellent.
