Dear TN friends,
This is my second photo of the Rüppells Starling, lamprotornis purpuropterus.

Endemic to NE Africa in parts of Ethiopia, Southern Sudan, South through Uganda and Kenya to Tanzania.
A large (30 – 36 cm), long-tailed glossy starling with pale eyes. Less brightly coloured and iridescent than Splendid and Purple glossy starlings, with a much longer, graduated tail. Juveniles duller with dark eyes.

Habitat:
Open woodland, farmland, old cultivation and around human habitation.

Status:
Local resident.

Voice:
Variable harsh shrieks and whistles, with some very parrot-like screeching.

(Sources: Birds of Sahara, South of the Sahara by Ian Sinclair and Peter Ryan / Collins Field Guide: Birds of East Africa, by J.G. Williams and N. Arlott)

I DON'T FEED HIM CHIPS!

Hi Peter,

There is nothing subtle about this Starling! Those blues are amazing and with the black he is just striking. The beautiful big white eye calls even more attention to him. Great timing to get him with the big chip in his mouth and the tail raised. Colors and details of this flashy looking bird are wonderful.

Peter,

That is a super colorful bird! Incredible. You've captured him quite nicely - I really like the contrasts between the dark blue plumage and the bright eye. Looks... very interesting and sure different than anything I am used to. TFS.

Best Regards,

Martin

Incredibly beautiful plumage on this Starling Peter,
The shape of the bird reminds me somewhat of our grackles here in Ohio. Composed nicely and in a great pose. Well done!!

A fine shot of this spectacular starling, the Rüppell's, taken in a well timed shot to capture a great pose with a morsel in its mouth. It shows nice and clearly against the ground and the colours are amazing.

Hi Peter,
Fine action captures even as the bird strikes the pose. The mvement is evident from the slight motion registed in the plumage of the starling.Their eyes have a rivetting natural quality mush like those of the warbler's. THe colours of the bird stands out very well.It must be a joy to watch them in real.
TFS & Cheers

Hi Peter,
I would never had picked this brightly coloured bird as a Starling.
It is so different to the small black and white speckled bird we know well in the west.
A very interesting post.
TFS and cheers
Steve
