This week I’ve reached the 25.000 points for almost 500 photos. THANKS everybody for your appreciation.

Looking through my archive of my holiday in Ethiopia, two years ago, I found this photo. It is taken between the tribes we visited in the South. The light conditions were not ideal as you can see in the background.

As far as I could find this is the second time that a photo of this bird is placed on TN.

The Rufous-crowned Roller Coracias naevia (formerly Purple Roller), is found over sub-Saharan Africa to as far south as Namibia and the Transvaal. Compared with other rollers its colours are rather dull and its voice rather harsh and grating. Its preferred habitat is dry thornveld where it spends long periods perched at the top of thorn trees or poles, watching for food items such as insects, spiders, scorpions and small lizards on the ground. It rocks to and fro about its longitudinal axis during display flights, calling raucously all the while.

It is 36-40 cm. It has a rocking display flight in which the wings appear to beat independently, calling as described above. Perches fairly low down and is normally less active than other rollers.

This species seems to be an opportunist breeder, possibly linked to rains, as its breeding season varies from place to place. It nests in natural hollows in trees or uses old woodpecker holes, usually laying 3 white eggs. The young are fed by both parents.

Dag Peter,

Zoveel heb ik er niet mijn archief, dat ik dergelijke mooie vogel nog kan vinden na tweejaar.
Zeer mooie positie, hij heeft precies de fotograaf in de gaten.
Mooi portret foto van deze vogel. Bedankt.

This is a fine sharp capture of the Rufous-crowned Roller from your Ethiopian trip.
The difficult lighting was well managed and the pose, colours POV and composition are excellent to make this a fine portrait of this species and a nice marker of your contributions to TN.
Thanks and kind regards,

hallo Peter

Hola Peter

Bello pájaro con colores muy atrativos. A mi no me gusta estos cielos tan nublados, pero reconozco que en esta imagen hace que resalte el ave. Perfecto POV y nitidez.

Un saludo de Antonio

Hi Peter,

Congratulation on that milestone on TN! Indeed i thank you for your all contribution to us! this one is so spectacular and great presentation too. Nicely done, as usual.
TFS and have a nice day!

Congrats on your milestone! The subject is set off nicely against tha sky, even the diagonal branch adds to the photo! Nice and sharp with good feather detail.

Hi Peter,
a nice picture to celebrate with.
it's not easy to get the right exposure of pretty dark bird against the sky, you did a decent work here, maybe you should
had open a 1/2 step more for more details in the plumage.
Nevertheless this is a bvery fine work with goos aharpness,
good composition.
Well done.

Bonjour Peter,
Très bonne valorisation du sujet sous une bonne profondeur de champ et une belle lumière avec une excellente opposition sur l'arrière plan.
A bientôt sur TN pour de nouvelles aventures.

Clear skies, and whitish, always a pain to photograph (especially birds). But you've solved this with impeccable expertise! ... Good work, Congratulations!
Also a big hug and more congratualtions in ypur 25K and (almost) 500 shots!!!! Bravo! We hope see more, and more of your work!

Regards & TFS

Hello Peter,
Congratulations on surpassing the 500 point mark. You post a very unusual looking bird, one that I have never seen before.
The colors are very beautiful and they show up well against the all white BG. You managed to get excellent exposure on the bird as he sits patiently in the tree. Great work!!

Hello Peter,
very well defined shot of this roller. The hairs on the beak are so clear and very special too.
This shot looks like a painting with a white background.
I like its pestel colour presentation and it is well shown.
