Not a spectacular colored bird, but a real endemic. Also new to TN.

The Abyssinian Slaty-flycatcher (Melaenornis chocolatinus) is a species of bird in the Muscicapidae family. It is often placed in the genus Dioptrornis instead. Its natural habitat is found in the highlands of Eritrea and Ethiopia.

A drab, grey-brown, rather nondescript flycatcher with a creamy yellow eye; lacks white eye-ring of the White-eyed Slaty Flycatcher. Pale eye and darker back separate it from Pale and African Grey flycatchers, both of which occur at lower elevations in more arid habitats. Larger (15 – 17 cm), greyer and longer-tailed than African Dusky Flycatcher.

High- and mid-altitude forest and woodland edge, farmlands and suburbia.

Various ‘seep’ calls; harsher chittering alarm note.

‘Birds of Africa, South of the Sahara’, by Ian Sinclair and Peter Ryan; Wikipedia.

Hello Peter,
Amazing and fine shot of this beautiful Abyssinian Slaty-Flycatcher, good composition and BG.
Salutacions cordials.

Hi Peter,
this bird is wonderful, you show us so pretty birds from Ethiopie I've never seen before.
Have you visited this country for human help or just for travelling? I would never have the idea to be there for holidays ...
But I don't know much about this country - only that there are living so many poor people.
So thanks for sharing this part of nature with us, bye
Sabine - wishnugaruda

Hi Peter,

He may have rather drab colors but he is a very beautiful bird. The face and expression reminds me of our Say's Phoebe who does have pretty colors. Excellent details and shadings, a lovely eye, and a wonderful pose. I love the composition - he seems to be staring at the stump of the branch.

Hello Peter,
Marvelous capture of this species in a great setting. Focus, composition and exposure are all excellent. Thank you Peter.

The bird may not be well coloured BUT the image is and the surroundings as in environment are well coloured which make it an overall image instead of a focused one..you are quite the master of your gear1

Hello Peter,
A fine capture of an Abyssinian Slaty Flycatcher that you took from a fine POV with good sharpness that makes it stand out from the OOF tree trunk behind it. The composition and eye contact are great.
Congratulations on yet another new species for TN and for a fine capture of it.
Best wishes,

Hi Peter.
Very cute bird despite its colouration is not the brightest. Especially I like impressive bird's eye. And very attractive pose. However, impressiveness of the tree branches also is amazing as well as whole scene. DOF is superb. Main subject is crsip sharp and BG is blurred greatly. I also like impressive 3D-feature of the shot. Well done and TFS.

Hallo Peter,

Hi Peter

A really beautiful composition - the combination of pose and dof really works well in this shot

Hallo Peter
I saw this image of the Abyssinian Slaty-Flycatcher yesterday but time was not on my side and I had to let it pass. Now I am back, to give my comment. This might be a common, colourless bird but to me it has the most magnetic eyes. It is almost if one can look right through it. You have captured this one in a lovely surrounding on the tree with its new green leaves. These young loots give lots of charisma to this image and I like the view of it. A lovely image with lots of charm, presented in a most pleasant manner. Great composition and viewpoint.
Best regards

hello peter,
nice capture of Abyssinian Slaty-Flycatcher, the bird looks cute, good dof and fine pov, liked the composition too,

Thanks for this first and original post of a rarely seen bird, Peter. Such contributions add great value to our site.
The bird has a distinct appearance -- especially that yellow eye.
Thanks and all the best.

Hi Peter,

I like the way the image is composed with shoots and stubs surrounding this bird. Not colorful but you have made her sitting proud on that branch. Tact sharp focus and congratulations on being the first.

Best regards,

Hello Peter,
You have brought back from Ethiopia so many pictures of interesting birds. This one I like a lot for its composition and its natural colors and surrounding. The bird is very fine and elegant, no need to be spectacular for a good picture!
Thanks to present this species, new on TN
Best regards
