In the South of Ethiopia we came often through very dry areas. In some places there were a lot of termitaries (termite hills) sometimes 4 meters and more high. On top of it often we saw Red-and-yellow Barbets.

English: Red and Yellow Barbet
Latin: Trachyphonus erythrocephalus
Dutch: Vuurkopbaardvogel

Identification: A striking yellow and red bird with upperparts, wings and tail black, spotted with round white spots. It gave the impression of a gaudily coloured woodpecker and like a woodpecker it has an undulating flight. The underparts are bright pale yellow, washed with orange on the chest, with a narrow white-spotted black band across the upper breast. The male has a black streak down the centre of the throat. Southern nominate race has black throat (in male) and more extensive red on head than this Northern race on the photo.

Voice: A loud 'toogel-de-doogle' repeated over and over, often by several birds in chorus.

Distribution and habitat: Endemic to NE Africa. Local resident in Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya and north-east Tanzania. Frequents semi-arid bush country and open thornbush areas, favouring localities where there are termite hills in which it breeds. It is widely distributed and common in many parts of the Northern Frontier Province of Kenya. 23 cm.

Hi Peter,
what a beautiful many-coloured bird taken from a good POV in a nice composition, i like the diagonal pose on the rock, good sharp, very lovely colours.
TFS. Maurizio

You had a double bonus on this one Peter! I was trying to figure out the geology of the "rock" before I learned from reading it was not as such. this makes a perfect and natural perch for the unusual coloured bird. Unusual perhaps but certainly beauty!

Hello Peter, this is a beautiful bird well colored.
Best regards

Hi Peter,

I remember how surprised I was the first time I saw one of these termite hills. But I wasn't lucky enough to see a Barbet. The reds and yellows with the black and white wings are amazing. I'd love to see one in flight. Great details of his face, wings and plumage. Very interesting notes to go along with the wonderful image.

Hello Peter,
A fine capture of this spectacular Red and Yellow Barbet. I like the POV taken with good sharpness and the composition at the top of the termite hill against the blue sky, all of which make this an attractive image.
Thanks and best regards,

Hello Peter,
Those birds sure know where to find food! As Ivan said, this is spectacular specie, very colorful and unusual to me! You chose good composition in interesting POV. Did you crop it a lot? TFS,

What a fascinating bird. Beautiful colors. The patterns on the head are so strikingly different from the body that it almost appears to have 'dressed in the dark' but the results are gorgeous. LOVELY PHOTO!
