Hello TN Friends,

Another special bird this time, new for TN.
This is the Tacazze Sunbird, Nectarinia tacazze. Males are 22 cm, females 15 cm.
Endemic to NE Africa. The bill is long and relatively straight.
Male has reddish or purple iridescence on breast and mantle. Female is darker with mottled (not streaked) underparts.

Highland grassland, heath, forest edge, gardens and cultivation between 1800 and 4000 m.

Common; aggressive, chasing other birds away from flowers.

Slow, slurred ‘chew chew chew’; twittering, unmusical song.

Hi Peter,

Another first - Congratulations! I love these little Sunbirds - the first time I saw one in India I thought it was a kind of hummingbird. The upside down pose is wonderful - he found a way to get to that flower. Beautiful iridescent colors. Maybe it's the angle but the bill looks very curved. Lovely setting and composition.

Hello Peter,

You have captured this image with the bird in a fine pose. Even if not very sharp the image shows well the bird. You have shown very well the metalic reflections of the plumage.

Thank you for sharing,
