[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I donít like to post photos of birds in the hand. But this is an exception. We drive to a professional ringing station where they also did scientific research on rare bird species in Gambia. That morning they had only one bird. This Snowy-crowned Robin-chat (Cossypha niveicapilla).
A few moments after making some pictures they let him free.

The bird is 20.5 to 22 cm long and weighs 34 to 45 g. The bird resembles the White-crowned Robin-chat (C. albicapillus), but is much smaller and has a shorter tail and also the orange-brown chest extends to the neck. The bird is slate gray at the top. The tail has black central tail feathers. The crown and eyebrow stripe are white. The bird is orange brown at the underside. The beak and legs are black.

Distribution and habitat
The bird is found in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa from Mauritania to Middle Eastern Sudan and Western Ethiopia, around Lake Victoria and in West Africa in North-eastern Angola.

The bird is found in the undergrowth of forests, mostly semi-open forest in savanna areas, dense forest, river conductive scrub, coastal scrub, mangrove forests, old plantations and gardens with plenty of shade and undergrowth. Usually up to 1400 m. Sometimes mountain areas up to 2400 m above sea level in East Africa.

The size of the population is not quantified. There is no reason to assume that the number of species is declining. For this reason, the Snowy-crowned Robin-chat is not threatened on the IUCN Red List.

What beauty, Peter! A superb specimen and an excellent photograph (despite the subject being hand-held).
