Waterbuck

[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This is a Defassa Waterbuck. For a very long time, Waterbuck and Defassa Waterbuck were considered as two separate species. But now due to the hybridization between the two, they are considered as a single species (Kobus ellipsiprymnus). Defassa Waterbuck is a Near Threatened species (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterbuck ).
The common waterbuck has a conspicuous white ring encircling a dark rump, while the defassa has wide white patches on either side of the rump. Its long, shaggy hair and brown-gray coat emits an oily secretion from its sweat glands, which acts as a water repellent. The meat of older waterbuck takes on an unpleasant odor from the waterproofing secretions of its sweat glands, prompting predators to choose other prey. (https://seaworld.org/Animal-Info/Animal-Bytes/Mammals/Defassa-Waterbuck and http://www.outtoafrica.nl/animals/engwaterbuck.html ).
While moving around Lake Nakuru in Kenya, I found this animal. Its color and the background color blended very well. I had a Canon 75-300 lens without IS and without tripod and I was adjusting my camera, worrying that the animal would disappear. But it stood and gave a regal pose. |

Hello Bala,
Beautiful picture of this Waterbuck. Good details and typical African warm tone. Vertical form could have been more attractive.

Hello Bala,
What a magnificent species with impressive horns and a gorgeous chocolate brown coat. The warm colors and nice detail show it off in an attractive manner. A real beauty!!
The only large animals we have here in Ohio are the White-tailed deer.
Ron

Thanks for sharing this lovely picture from your archives.

Hello Bala,
Nice photo of this waterbuck in fine sharpness and beautiful warm colors. You can cut off a piece of the right side to get the animal a bit out of the center for a better composition.
Regards,
Peter
