Panther chameleon
(Furcifer pardalis)

Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Reptilia
Order: Squamata
Family: Chamaeleonidae
Genus: Furcifer
Species: F. pardalis

It is a species of chameleon. It lives in the Northern and Eastern coasts of the African island, Madagascar. It lives in a tropical forest biome. In the wild, the panther chameleon may live for 2-3 years.

The chameleon's diet consists of small birds, insects, and other reptiles. The panther chameleon also is very territorial. Most often in these fights the chameleon that charges wins. But if the fight lasts awhile one of chameleons may begin to gnaw ferociously and bite through the flesh and crush the bone, leaving the other chameleon to a slow death.

The panther chameleon has many adaptations. The tongue is longer than the body and is used to catch insects. The chameleon will shoot out the tongue and the bug will get stuck on the sticky surface on the tip of the tongue. The tongue retracts and brings the insect to the chameleons mouth for eating. This may take only one sixteenth of a second. The skin of the chameleon is in layers and changes color because of the mood of the chameleon. The chameleon will not change colors for camouflage. Plus their eyes can look in two directions at once. This is used so they can spot their meal.

The panther chameleon will sometimes engage in the strangest form of combat. It will have color changing contests! This is their alternative to viciously clashing.

Reach sexual maturity in one year.

Hello Andrea,
Wonderful capture.Colors, contrast, sharpness, details, framing, use of light and composition are excellent.

Sempre belle foto Andrea!
Bellissimo il contrasto di colori, ottima composizione.

Wonderful capture, Andrea.
Very fine perspective, DOF and colours. I like the way it has curled its tail around the branch, for safety, I guess.

Hallo Andrea,
thank you for the beautiful picture of this strange creature. I hope that this species (and others also) will survive considering the strongly threatened habitats in Madagascar.
You presented us a wonderful nature document!

Hi Andrea,
Very good picture of this chameleon.
Great color, DOF and BG

Excelent shot!
I love these guys...Furcifer pardalis is probably my favorite chameleon species.
Keek them comming!
All the best,

Great photo of this special chameleon. The colors are beautiful, but not very effective as camouflage. They must not have many natural predators. Great DOF. Well done.
