Hi Folks,;-)

Yesterday I introduced Sandy, the Brown Fur Seal pup from the Seal Colony at Cape Cross, Namibia.
Today's photograph shows two Brown Fur Seals in some kind of bite situation. You know. Guess the big one could even be Sandy’s dad.
I was busy photographing and searching for an isolated seal and stuff among all these seals at the colony and while I was looking through the camera, I heard a visitor's voice in the background:

“Hey…look at that big one, it’s already the third one he’s *******.”

The probably reserved word ‘bang' was in the sentence. As my knowledge of the English language is some kind of limited and the voice sounded excited, I decided to change my camera position to take a shot…
So this photo is one of shots I took of 'the big one'.

Anyway we’ll talk about their behavior and reproduction in one of the next uploads. Promised.

Something else
Steve (Lordpotty) mentioned in a critique that he actually knew the seal specie.

“We have Fur Seals at several colonies near here.”(New Zealand)

Well..
In upload #1 we talked about the Pinniped, in #2 about the Eared seals.
We’ll go a bit further and we see that in the family Otariidae in the genus Arctocephalus there are 8 species . And I guess this specie is actually a Cape Fur Seal (A. pusillus) subspecies, the South African Fur Seal (A. pusillus pusillus) and the specie Steve was mentioning is his critique is probably the New Zealand Fur Seal or Southern Fur Seal(A. forsteri).

From wikipedia…
Species
SUBORDER PINNIPEDIA

Family Otariidae
Genus Arctocephalus
1.Antarctic Fur Seal, A. gazella
2.Guadalupe Fur Seal, A. townsendi
3.Juan Fernandez Fur Seal, A. philippii
4.Galapagos Fur Seal, A. galapagoensis
5.Cape Fur Seal, A. pusillus
South African Fur Seal, A. pusillus pusillus
Australian Fur Seal, A. pusillus doriferus
6.New Zealand Fur Seal or Southern Fur Seal, A. forsteri
7.Subantarctic Fur Seal, A. tropicalis
8.South American Fur Seal, A. australis

Special thanks to Steve. Thanks a lot for looking and reading. Have a nice day…

Hello Annick,
A superb capture of a parent Brown seal and its pup. The POV, pose and facial expression of the parent are taken with excellent technical qualities and the BG is suitably OOF.
Nice one and TFS!
Ivan

Hi Annick

Great pose and shot - I can just imagine the verbal comment! The NZ species is quite a bit smaller and darker than the SA Species.

Hallo Annick,
Groet,
Peter

A fine double portrait in the midst of nature Annick, hope that bite was a playful one. The details are so outstanding that I think you had a tripod, or at least a monopod attached to your camera!
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Annick,
Uncommon shot. Very detailed. The soft light is great. Brilliant action. Rare and majectic animals.

Hi Annick,

Super shot of this Brown Fur Seal and pup! Excellent detail it really leaps out of the screen and the f/4.5 has separated it from the background beautifully, really nice work mate,

all the best, Rick :)

Wow Annick!
This one is even better than the last.
You've captured these two brilliantly.
Excellent exposure again with fine detail and true colour.
I think you are right about the species too.
I believe ours is Arctocephalus fosteri as you said.
Cheers & TFS
Steve

Hi Annick,
Another intimate portrait added to my theme. Thank you. This is a great shot, technically as well a artistically :) the lighting has complimented the experssion of the animals and your DOF isolated the cluttered BG. TFS

Hallo Annick,

What a fine portret of the seal you have made! The image is very good being extremly sharp and having very fine and naturaly looking colors. The pose of the animals is very fine as you have well chosen the moment to take the photo.

Thank you for sharing,
