[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Thankyou to all the people who gave me such lovely critiques yesterday! To be honest, photographing the Snow Monkeys may be the wildlife equivalent of photographing Venice - it is hard to get a bad shot! ;)

This one was much much harder - it involved an exhausting 2 hour trek up the side of the volcano in thick mist (thats why the film got its name) and drizzle. The light was awful - hence the high shutter speed - and my room for movement was non existent (I was standing on bent over bamboo which was saturated and slippery) - about three metres to the right of this was the big male I posted earlier, sitting in what was his nest. The guides placed us in these positions, however, it was not until the person next to me dropped their water and the guides disappeared to get it and appeared way beneath me, that I realised I was about 4 - 5 meters above the ground - the bamboo suddenly seemed very insecure.

The magical thing about this shot was, when we got there the Silverback was on the nest - as we were placed into viewing positions two youngsters appeared from behind us. They wanted to get back to the family group and as we were in the way, they walked past us - I proved to be a convenient 'branch' for this one, so he climbed up me to this vantage point, from where he started to eat bamboo. He smelt of ripe fruit - mainly bananas - it was a magical moment - totally worth all the mud, giant stinging nettles, wet clothes .......

I do hope you like this one, if only for the moment it captured.

Hi James,
i loved you note, i really did...man i envy you. Pic's not bad either ;o) Great expression and very well captured, considering your precarious situation. Great stuff, thanks.
Paul

Oh those treks...I know of them from back in the day, but this is the kind of trek which leaves ones spirit dynamically added upon. And here....what an expression...so human in feeling and able to express through facials...A marvelous catch which even "that woman who studied gorillas and I cannot remember her name or yeah Goodall...) would like this as well...

This picture was worth just reading the post but the picture itself is worth the expression of this beautiful animal almost human or is it the opposite?? ;-) The fur is so thick and dark, it also looks clean and the smell of ripe fruit is fantastic. Just like bears, those big ones eat fruits and leaves, cann you imagine? I don't think they eat much meat if they do. Superb and I also think that when light is scarce and that you manage to get a nice picture, it is superb with detailsand subtility. Thank you James, well worth the trip!

Francine

Hi James . I am sure you know it but you are a lucky man to have been so close to such a fantastic animal. The detail in the fluffed up fur is spot on it looks like he has a big winter coat on. , and the look on its face. TFS.
Nick..

Another splendid shot on a facial expression my dear friend James. TFS and also thanks for your kind comments on my 100th post.
Cheers,

Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

hello James,
There is something very touching about this picture and it has also more impact, because taken in the wild. There is something so harmless in the eyes of this monkey (gorilla?).Very interesting light too. I just saw a few days ago a very impressive documentary on Jane Godall.
Best regards
Anne
