While doing marine conservation work on the island of Mahe we were just getting started doing a coral survey when we saw is this enormous Manta Ray - about 11 feet from tip to tip! The visibility wasn't that great, but he circled around us a few times, so I was able to get close enough for some decent photos.

The Seychelles is a small island nation located in the Indian Ocean northeast of Madagascar and about 1,600 km (1,000 miles) east of Kenya. The number of islands in the archipelago is often given as 115 but the Constitution of the Republic of Seychelles lists 155.

I stayed on the island of Mahé for most of the summer of 2006, doing marine conservation work. But also stayed on Curieuse for a week & visited Praslin The scenery was beautiful & the diving was incredible!

Hi Margo,

A very nice and rare upload on TN,I have seen them as well only from above standing at the shipsrail, well done and tfs

Hi Margo,
this must have been one hell of an encounter! And you had the reflex of pointing your camera to the great creature. How I envy you for the experience. The photo is well composed, and I don't mind about a little bit of fin missing on top. Again I think you did not exploit all the possibilities of your picture (I'd go for post-processing: bigger picture size, more contrast, taking back some overexposure, more sharpness, all in PS; but maybe I'm wrong). I tried to do a workshop version, I hope you like it.
My best regards

Hi Margo
I cannot view a photo like this without laughing and remembering the evening entertainment in one of the islands in the Maldives: male guests were given bucket with fish, and rays climbed their legs to get the fish. Most times , when the ray was getting close to the swimming trunks, the buckets were abandoned and the men raced to the shore...

The one in your photo is a beauty, and I add it to my theme "under and above the seas and lakes"

You must have wonderful memories. Do you have a website?

Thanks for sharing.
Warm greetings from the Tzaneen Dam in Limpopo, South Africa
