Ground Squirrel
Xerus inauris

I have a new found fascination for these critters. You see it is winter over here and they do not hibernate. I found their burrow not far from where I stay. There are one male and four females staying here now. They share the burrow with a yellow mongoose. (which still evades photographic capture..)

I plan to try and shoot them on the weekend with a wide angle lens and a remote shutter. Any suggestions regarding the set-up would be welcome.

They are ground dwellers all very similar in appearance and show preference for areas with sparse and open vegetation. They eat a wide range of plant foods. Mostly roots and stems while excavating the burrows. Termites and insects are also eaten.

They are often confused with Meerkat and the Yellow Mongoose.

Hope you like it.

Hi Gerhard,

I'm not going to ask how you know it's a boy. Lovely image with very warm light. This is great - I failed to get anything this good of these cute little things when I was with you in SA.

I think I'd clone out the little bit of red in the eye. Apart from that it's lovely. Well done - hope you are well, speak soon - I miss you guys.

What I great shot Gerhard .
I love what you have done to the color.
Superb details, POV and BG.
Again great shot.
Regards
JC

Hello Gerhard,

Hello Gerhard,
I've never been to your lovely part of the world (maybe one day)but I imagine capturing an animal like this is very difficult.
It must take great patience.
Good lighting, excellent detail and a nice blurred BG.

Hello Gerard
Soos met alle seuntjies is hulle albasters nooit te ver weg nie.

Great shot my friend, well captured and excellently presented in this vertical composition. The colours are very natural and it is amazing how everything (vegetation included) took on this red colour of the fertile Free State soil. The DOF was spot-on showing very sharp details and the exposure/lighting was very well managed.
Great work and TFS.

Grehard, they certainly hide into the BG, and must be hard to see at times. Wonderful capture, super pose, nice and sharp too.
Well done,
Janice

The pose of the Squirrel and POV are superb. Love the framing and colours too.

Hi Gerhard

Excellent shot of this guy. Is he looking for his ladies, or making sure no other male Ground Squirrel is looking for his ladies? Whatever the case, he has a grand tall pose and is indeed a handsome chap. Another lovely piece of work from you. Thank you!

Gerhard,

Awesome pic. The BG is great and the subject is very sharp. Composition, POV and Lighting are all excellent and make a great pic. TFS,
Sheriff

Hi Gerhard!

Looks like you are living in Sepia country!
Nice alomost monochrome image. Good focus and good exposure. The shallow DOF rendered beautifull blur in the BG. The low POV is also excellent.

Great shot and TFS.

Excellent side profile capture of these really jittery wound up characters. The ground squirrels over there are somewhat similar to the ones we have (Spermophilus beecheyi) over here and can be just as skittish. I photographed them not too long ago, I found by sitting on the ground and waiting they become bolder and are easier to photograph. I spent 2-3 hours waiting patiently but finally got some good images. :)
