Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber)

The Scarlet Ibis is one of the most striking sights in the world of birds, flying, feeding and nesting in large groups. Some birds, especially those in the tropics, stay in the same general area throughout life. The Scarlet Ibis is classified with other birds of tropical America who have few or no close relatives except in other tropical regions.

Body length 56 to 61 cm. Colour is bright red in both sexes, with a long neck, long curved probing bill, black tipped feathers, and perching feet that are only slightly webbed. The uniformly bright-red plumage of the Scarlet Ibis intensifies as the bird grows older. As with flamingos, the brilliant red colour of the bird comes from pigments in the bodies of crustaceans on which it feeds. The long curved beak is used to probe for food in mud and shallow water, guided mostly by touch. It flies strongly with its neck extended, almost as if it were gliding. Like other birds, Scarlet Ibis fights with their beak, legs, and wings against enemies in order to protect themselves and their offspring.

It is one of the most beautiful birds in the world for me. The colour is striking. I did not adjust the saturation settings at all. This red is the natural colour. I hope you like it.

I love this one.
This is one of your best birds.
Great details, colours, pose and a great informative note.
Excellent work.

Hoe rooier, hoe mooier. Dis 'n pragskoot.
Very good shot of this beautiful bird. Excellent job. Into my favourites.

A great portrait, Gerhardt, in a superb environment. Technically perfect at all levels. The low POV adds lot's of personality to this shot... and what a beautiful bird. Definitely S.A. is a paradise for you, guys

These Ibises seem very popular on nature sites, and its easy to see why.The colour and shape are so appealing.
A very nice portrait. I like the tree behind...is it a flamboyant? It looks like ones we had on Niue.

Gerhard, Most exceptional capture..The pose, details & striking bold red color makes this a favorite!! Great job!

Now this one goes so well with mr Giraffe's hat (grin) Excellent shot Gerhard you are a pro!

I couldnt agree more with you: this is one of the prettiest birds in the world (along with the crowned crane and the good ol` peacock). The bird has fandastic features but the blur on FG/BG is bizzare (not sure why yet...)
Still this is an outstanding portrait, I gotta hand it out to ya !

Very nice composition. The colors and details of the ibis are amazing.Very interesting note.

I think it is not one of the most beautiful for me, but I admit the deep scarlet is impressing. The quality of the shot is very very good. I like to see the horizontal composition with all the space at the right, I wouldnt have done that way and I like it.

Una ave espectacular con un colorido maravilloso, difícil de retratar, pero que en este caso se reproduce con total fidelidad.

I can only imagine from your photo what it must be like to come across such a bright bird in the wild. What a thrill that must be! I love the composition of this photo, the branches are arranged in such a nice pattern. His red color jumps out at you! So sharp and clear.
