[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Malachite Kingfisher lives alone or in pairs, and adopts a territorial behaviour. This bird is not very shy. It perches on exposed place, at small height above water, on a branch, a reed, a stump or a rock. When a prey is selected, it spreads and drops its crest which feathers disperse in all directions with the wind. _Its fishing method is always the same: it dives with little noise; it immediately returns at once with the captive prey brings it to its perch where it kills it by beating. It carries its prey across the bill, or head first in its crop. And then, it swallows the whole prey.

Hi Nyala,

A very nice capture of this small kingfisher, although its a bit soft, the colors of the bird and the clean BG,makes this an excellent compositrion, tfs

Hi Nyala,

Is a very good composition, the details of this malachite kingfisher are great, the position of branch is perfect and BG is super-very good contrast with bird. Nice work. Best regards, Cezar T.

bonjour Nyala

très belle photo avec de merveileux couleurs du plumage,
j'aime l'angle de vue et le cadrage de l'image, TFS

Hallo Nyala
My first posting was a kingfisher, and now I tend to look for all the others types of kingfishers on the gallery. Going through the web pages on Trek Nature is a new adventure every time, and I can understand why it is so difficult to get away from the PC. There are just so many talented photographers on the site and they all have such spectacular portfolios. image well. I came across this Malachite Kingfisher in your gallery. A real neat macro shot, well presented and worth a smiley. In comparison to mine this kingfisher is such a graceful, vivid and dignified looking bird, and what I see in size wise it is quite tiny. Its beak is nearly bigger than the bird. I just love the colourful feathers on its head, and its read paws. I see you have taken this shot in the Umfolozi game reserve. We stay about an hour’s drive away from there and try to visit the park often. My husband known as (loot) on Trek Nature is a honorary officer in the park. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
