Warthog / Phacochoerus aethiopicus

Time is one of my biggest enemies at present, so I cannot spend as much of it on the site as I would loved too. I still need to wrap things up before we leave for the Kruger National Park in less than a month. Meanwhile I would like to introduce you to one of Miss Piggy's distant relatives, aunty "Vlakvark", to keep you company for the time being. Vlakvark is warthog in Afrikaans, for those of you who do not know. (Directly translated it would mean "shallow pig" which is probably aimed at describing its nature – wallowing in the mud and/or foraging around for food on its front knees.)

I will drop in every now and again, because staying away from the gallery is like punishment for a youngster that did wrong and have to sit in the corner. I do however want to thank everybody in advance who drops by my gallery in my absence. It is much appreciated, and will not go unnoticed.

This image was taken at the Bhejane hide in the iMfolozi Game Park.

General Overview
Don't be fooled by the comical trot or the short-sighted and nervous disposition of this silent member of the pig family. Behind the tusks and ugly wart-like lumps on its face lies a tough and courageous spirit that has put wild dogs, cheetahs and even formidable leopards to flight. (I've recently seen a video clip where a warthog even made a lioness pay for having the nerve to attack it. Probably the lioness attacked not out of the need to eat, but merely out of playful curiosity, just because it happened to stumble upon the pig, but the lioness made a bewildered and amusing retreat once the warthog attacked back and struck her a number of times with those deadly tusks).

A warthog is easily recognised as it trots through the veld with its tail held erect, the warthog is a gregarious forager that uses the upper surface of its snout as a spade, constantly digging for food in the hardest soils. Going down on its front knees, which develop large, protective calluses, the warthog keeps its nose to the ground as it walks, rooting out bulbs and tubers.

Home to the warthog is the abandoned burrow of an aardvark, which it uses as a place of refuge when predators are around. Enlarging or modifying the burrow to suit its needs, a sow in season will line its burrow with grass, creating a cosy nest for her litter.

When running for shelter, young warthogs will scamper into their burrow head first, but adults do a remarkable about-turn at the entrance and reverse in, so as to present their formidable tusks to an attacker.

Family groups, numbering between 5-10, avoid other warthogs that may stray into their home ground, and maintain group contact with soft grunts.

I hope you enjoy looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

Hello Anna,
The question I ask myself is, "do I see any gregariousness between yourself and this Warthog?" I will have to allow you to answer this question to yourself and live with your response. Lol...
You must have quite a life there as you are able to see the many of the world's wildlife in their natural state.
An excellent capture with great detail to this muddy cousin of ours,
Have A great month ahead...

Good morning Anna
a great capture of Warthog from Kruger's fascinating nature. you greatly captured it with great POV, eyes contact and focus. It gave to you a special pose.
nicely composed.
When I was a child, we watched Tarzan cartoon on black-white TV and I remember "Horta" as a Warthog. Maybe funny memory:) But I remember horta, whenever I see this species.
thanks for sharing and thanks for good informative notes.
please forward my best regards to Loot.
have a nice week
PS: I see just after message, sorry for pts.

Hi Anna,

I am always impressed with the quality of your images. I do enjoy looking at them. I expect you will be taking pleasure in taking lots of new shots in Kruger. I'll be looking forward to them. I can't say that I see a lot of family resemblance but I suppose you know best. Perhaps it is more a kinship of personality and temperament. : )

Evelynn : )

Hello Anna,
A very charming creature! I always had a "faible" for these animals, I don't know why. May be because they remind me of an old wise man :-)
An excellent picture, despite the strong light, good focus on the animal and pleasing blue reflections of the water in the background.
I wish you a beautiful trip to Kruger.
Kind regards

Hello Anna,
A very fine and sharp capture of this Warthog posing very nicely for you. I expect you kept a safe distance as I'd guess they're not too friendly to humans either like our Wild Boar.
Beautiful light and colours in this capture too.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Anna
exelent image
very well done.

Hi Anna
I think wart hogs are so cute (in photography). Their hairy bodies, stubby legs and small eyes, make them look a bit comical. I like the way you captured him staring right into your lens. I can see by his wet nose he just had a drink or found something good to eat in the mud.
TFS Janice

Hello Anna,

Looking at this picture can transport me close enough to
Enjoy and almost smell and feel the contact, perfect shot.\
Recall me young years in my natal Uruguay, we use to
Hunting (in Spanish) Jabali, looks like very close to a Warthog
Very dangerous in the wild, we use to have seven or eight
Dogs Argentinian Dogos to help holding down from the ears,
And legs, waiting until we arrive.

Thanks for sharing, Lawhill.

Hi Anna,
I must thank you for your kind words on my picture of the Lesser Himalaya. As it is, I too am bogged down in work now and mark my occasional presence on TN through a picture from the archives.
Have a great outing to Kruger National Park!
Thanks for this great picture of a Warthog. Needless to say, you have a great sense of humour which I enjoy and appreciate.
'Aunty' does look quite prim to me despite her muddy feet :).

Hi Anna,
I love warthogs, for some reason.
And this one is beautifully captured... crisp details in those hard bristles of hair, the legs caked in mud...
and a great eye contact, showing his typical warthog attitude.
Great shot. TFS. : )

Hello Anna !
I love pigs, boars, and every animal of this family - so I am more than pleased to meet "Aunt Vlakvark". She's not exactly a beauty, but you made such a great portrait of her ! :-) I love all the details on the face, and I also like how the Warthog is looking at you. He looks funny with his nose and feet covered in mud. The composition, the POV, the colors, the pose of the animal and the eye-contact, everything is really excellent ! Very well done, and I hope you'll find more time for TN soon !

Hello Anna! Wonderful smooth guy. Good scene. Ideal POV and composition. Perfect exposure. Well done!

Hi Anna

Great shot of your aunty, so attractive. Is she single, I'd love to meet here one day :)
You guys are so lucky to all these big mammals wandering around, its so unlike anywhere else. Great shot from the hide, good POV and composition. Your hides are another unique structure that seem to work well in SA. We have a number of bird hides in Oz, but they just don't seem to work like they do in SA, nothing comes near them. Say hi to Loot for me, long time since we've seen him here.

Hi Anna,
thanks for your recent critiques and congratulations for coming back from the trip with wonderful shots. Very eager to look at it.
I like the notes written very much, as it is very useful indeed. We also have the wild boar that posses the similarity in term of habits. There were many casualties too.
The picture depicted is very clear with the light hitting the body and streams of long and hard whtish hairs could be seen clearly.
The habitat is similar too as they like mud, they even rake soft earth to get worms from it.
nice presentation and very infromative.

Hello Anna,
a very beautiful picture of the Warthog taken from an excellent POV in a great posture with a very intense eye contact, very good sharpness and splendid natural colours.
best regards
