The Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill, Tockus(1) leucomelas, is an African Hornbill. It is a medium sized bird, with length between 48 to 60 cm, characterized by a long yellow beak with a casque (only in males). The skin around the eyes and in the malar stripe is vivid red-coloured.
They present white belly, grey neck, and black back with abundant white spots and stripes. They feed mainly on the ground surface, where they forage for seeds, small insects, spiders and scorpions. Termites and ants are a preferred food source in the dry season.
Females lay 3 to 4 white eggs in their nest cavities and incubate them for about 25 days. Juveniles take about 45 days to mature. This hornbill is a common, widespread resident of the dry thorn fields and broad-leafed woodlands of inland southern to northeastern Africa. Frequently they can be sighted along roads.

(1)Tockus is a genus of the Bucerotidae family (hornbills). They are found in Africa.

Hi Annick,

Nice to hear from you again. This is an excellent shot. The lighting, the details are very good and the positioning in the frame excellent. The bokeh background compliments the bird very well. Excellent shot, very well done!

A great composition Annick!
The frontal POV of the face while seeing the body from the side makes this an unusual shot of a Yellow-billed Hornbill and the sharpness is good enough to see its eyelashes. Great lighting and BG too.
Well done and TFS,

machtig mooie capture hier Annick,
geweldig hoe hij op zijn gemakje in de lens zit te kijen. zeer fraai fotowerk hier. Ik denk dat een vergroting van alleen de kop ook een hele interessante foto kan opleveren, mooi werk hoor.
perettige dag verder.
groet Jaap

Hi Annick.
I thinks this funny and so beautiful bird is created for shooting. You have pictured it as a first-class and coquettish photo model. Amazing pose of the model and brilliant composition. Pictured scene (I mean nice branch with thin twig and colourful smooth BG) are superb. Bravo.

hi Annick,
this is beautiful image mainly because of the great lighting and the position of the bird. i only wish that you could have used more of that great background than this tight composition. situations like this may not repeat again you see. tfs.

Hi Annick,

This is gorgeous. It's a fabulous, simple composition. I love the yellow leaves and the neutral tones of the bird against that beautifully colored background is stunning. The little touch of red on the hornbill is so special. DOF is excellent.

Hello Annick,
Afschuwelijk? Ben benieuwd wat je er van vindt)

Hi Annick

You really have an impressive gallery of hornbills!!!
Again a splendid shot, with flawless sharpness across the entire length and depth of the big bird.
The side strong light is a great bonus and give this picture a distinct character.
The BG is equally superb - well blurred with perfectly saturated.

Bravo and TFS

Hello Annick,
This clear crisp image is a great composition. The head on pose captured is quite different, it sure shows the curve of its beak. The color and details are wonderful as always my friend.

Hi Annick

A beautiful posting - I really like the pose and the BG/lighting here - excellent work.

A beautifully composed shot Annick.
It strikes me that this isn't your typical Hornbill pose, but its more interesting for that.It certainly shows character, if looking a little more 'scruffy' than dignified.
Good informative note as usual.

Hi Annick,
Very nice portrait. Exposure is well controlled and well saturated colors look lovely. TFS
Have a nice weekend

Hoi Annick,

Knappe foto.

great composition this is beautiful image.

Hello Annick

This is a beautiful image with lovely lighting and colours.
The subject is well placed in the frame in a lovely natural setting. The leaves even match the palette of the shot.
Excellent POV and DOF.
As usual the image is tack sharp.
Well done.

Une prise extra, du cadrage au piqué, c'est superbe!
