An African elephant photographed close to the Tropic of Capricorn in South Africa’s Nasionale Krugerwildtuin.

You can see the tusks are broken. The tusks are teeth; the second set of incisors become the tusks. They are used for digging for roots and stripping the bark off trees for food, and, fighting each other during mating season, or defending themselves against predators. They weigh from 50-100 pounds and can be from 5 to 8 feet long, both bulls and cows have tusks…

Hi Annick. I have never seen an Elephant in the wild only in a Zoo when i was young. So maybe one day i will get to see a fine animal like this . The poor thing looks a bit sad . a great picture showing good detail and colour. well done TFS.

Hallo Annick,

het is me een eer om de buurman van de dag naast jou te zijn.

Goed het scherpte punt op de olifant met een wazige voor en achtergrond.
Prima foto weer zoals altijd.

Hello Annick,
A fine portrait from a great POV of an African Elephant (cow?) in a fine central composition among the long grasses with a good OOF natural BG.
TFS this fine image,

Hi Annick

A great composition, good colour and superb detail (great isolation from BG). Well observed and captured.

This is an incredible photo. I have a question though: with the broken tusks, will he starve? What will become of him? The reality of it saddens me, but the photo is so detailed, so well composed that I can't help but be drawn to it. I love elephants, though I'm afraid the closest I get to being able to see them is the Animal Planet channel. Thanks for sharing a superb capture.

Hi Annick, this si a well composed portrait of the elephant. She is standing so quietly for you, but still has her eye on you - just in case you decide to get too close!
Nicely captured,
