The Three Rondavels on Mpumalanga's Panorama Route give a spectacular view over the Blyde River Canyon.Shaped like traditional African beehive huts, The Three Rondavels from three huge pinnacles of rock rising above the Canyon below.

Once known as the Three Sisters, the geological formations known today as The Three Rondavels, are one of the many natural highlights along Mpumalanga's Panorama route.

South Africans known the Rondavels as a traditional beehive- shaped hut built and used over centuries by indigenous people as their homes. If you have been or plan to go to the Kruger National Park, you will know that some camp accommodation is in Rondavels.

The Three Rondavels are spectacular peaks which look exactly like Rondavels- round and fat, rising to a peaked top, but much, much higher than any traditional dwelling. In fact, when you stand on the view point, 1380m above sea level with the Blyde River Canyon below, you will still be looking up at those three distinctive peaks which tower 700m above the surrounding countryside.

These three geological formations were also once known as "The Chief and his Three Wives". The flat- topped peak was named Mapjaneng(The Chief) after a legendary Bapedi Chief, Maripi Mashile, who defeated invadng Swazis in a great battle near here. The three peaks are named after his three wives(from left to right)-Magabolie, Mogoladikwe, and Maseroto.

How were these magnificent mountains formed?Apparently erosion wore away the soft underlying stone, leaving exposed slate and quartzite that shape these dramatic rock formations.

Hello Srikumar,
A well known place for me. I got almost the same photo taken in 2005 in a very foggy atmosphere.
This photo is very beautiful in clear weather conditions. Excellent composition in beautiful colours and good sharpness.

hallo Sri
very nice picture with good sharpness and beautiful colours
thanks gr lou

Ciao Srikumar, fabntastic landscape, superb sky, excellent clarity, splendid light and wonderful natural colors, very well done, my friend, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Hi Sri,
Although the clouds are a little overexposed, this landscape photo is breathtaking. First of all the view itself is extraordinary, and the way how you managed to protect your camera (and the pic) from the direct backlight is something must be taught. The viewer feels him/herself on the rock, just a few steps from the dizzying deepness. Uitstekende werk, meneer. ;-)
Best regards, László

Hi Srikumar,

Splendid landscape of south Africa, I like very much the clouds on the top of the mountain.
The tree and bush to the F / G hangs the composition, beautiful natural colors and sharpness.
Great POV and DOF, TFS.
My best regards.

Dear Srikumar,
amazing landscape in deep colours, the bizarre shapes of the rocks brought out by strongly contrasting backlight in a most dramatic way. Very impressed by the atmospheric beauty and your powerful presentation. Thank you!
