Les hyènes sont des parents très attentionnés. Les mères mettent bas dans une tanière commune. Cette tanière est creusée à même le sol et dispose de plusieurs issues afin de se préserver des attaques. La mère surveille de très près sa progéniture. Les portées excèdent rarement 3 jeunes qui sont allaités pendant parfois plus d’un an. Chez la hyène tachetée, les petits naissent les yeux ouverts.Afin de protéger ses petits des prédateurs, la maman hyène change régulièrement de terrier.
