This Red-eyed Dove was taken in the World of Birds outside Houtbay. In this case I am pretty sure that the red eyes are not caused by a hangover, this birdie is way to sweet to do that!

More info on the Red-eyed Dove (352)

A large pinkish dove with a red eye. Size: 30-33cm. About one and half times bigger than a laughing dove. Afr: Grootringduif

A large pinkish coloured dove. As with other doves, the bill is short, slender and appears pointed. The bill is black. The eye is orange or red, and there is a ring of skin around the eye, which is purplish red.

This is a pigeon-sized dove, which is pinkish-grey below, and purplish gray above. The head is pale and the forehead head appears quite pale - pinkish-white in comparison with the breast and back. It has a wide black half-collar on the hind neck and no white tip to the tail is visible from above.

This is a common dove of well wooded areas - has a preference for largish trees and has adapted very well to alien trees, parks and gardens. It is usually seen singly or in pairs, and often forages in gardens in company with other doves.

The Red-eyed dove has a far carrying syncopated cooing call kooROOkuku…….Kooku,… kooROOkuku……Kooku, repeated without pause many times over.

This species nests all months, although mainly in the summer months. The nest is a platform of twigs, in the fork of a tree or bush, usually 2-3 metres above the ground.

Very nice Japie! Great profile with the eye providing good interest. I guess you could call this one the "Red Eye Special"! ;-)) I think doves are my favorite around here as they make the most soulful cooing sound in the quiet of the morning..Thanx for posting this one!

Which eye! The red round is impressive.
Thank you to send such beautiful images Japie. Why the (352)
in your note?

No, no... Not fair. Your mugshots are in a class of their own. Brilliant eye-detail. Crystal clarity. Great work Japie.

Un título que sintetiza la expresión del ave Japie... aunque todos sabemos de la verdadera cara de muchas especies de palomas.
Bonitos tonos, buen encuadre y DOF.
Obeservando con mucha atención (y quizás imaginación), puedo verte en el reflejo de su ojo.

A title that synthesizes the expression of the bird Japie... although all we know of the true "face" of many species of doves.
Pretty tones, good frame and DOF.
Observing with much attention (and perhaps imagination), I can see you in the reflection of its eye.

Excellent detail and color. You are really good at this. Have you ever been to Krugersdorp Game reserve?? Nice birding opportunities there.
