OstrichStruthio camelus

Actually I did not plan to post this photo of the little ostrich 'chick' quite yet, but since there were a number of critiquers who 'oohed' and 'aahed' my previous posting because they never saw an ostrich chick before I decided to post it now rather than later. Also, since I did not post any dedication to all the precious moms all over the world on "Mothers Day" (celebrated last weekend), I decided to dedicate this photo to al the 'CHICKS', whether they be mothers or not, young or matured, who might visit this page. I want the ladies to understand, just for the sake of decency and transparency, that I do not mean to use the 'chick' word in any derogatory or disparaging manner. It is used purely to link up with this posting of the little ostrich chick (sort of tongue-in-cheek like).

May we never take our mothers, wives, or girlfriends for granted, but before I continue; I just want to apologise to all the guys who perhaps would have wanted to read more about ostriches. As you can see there are no space for further notes, since the 'chicks' has taken over once again (chuckle).

Having said that, this dedication is especially to all the wonderful photographer 'chicks' here on TrekNature. I would like to mention some of the names of those ladies whom I had specific dealings with here on TN. They are:-

ManYee Desandies, Janice Dunn, Pam Russel, Şebnem Kanat, Sky Fa, Teunie Polak, Betsie Stander, Sabine Garuda, Monika Michalczuk vel Juchimiuk, Stephane Racine, Valerie Schnepp, Tanja Alma, Silke Force, Charmaine Arthur, Reina Heuven, Nel Diepstraten, Janice Smith, Lori Cannon, Isabel Perez, Anna-Lu McGormack, Anne Gattlen, Angelina Deans, Alli Hemingway, Emma Taylor, Betty Khoury, Birgit Ninn, Dorota Mazurowska, Joanna Wieszorek, Donna Rasmussen, Cecilia Lazzaro, Helene Provencher, Claudine Besse, Deborah Kelleher, Elena Terletska, Evelynn Smith, Feather Forestwalker, Stephanie Loh, Karan Little, Kirsten Lennon, Hilary Wilkinson, Djuna Ivereigh, Julie Wyatt, Jane Carol, Claudia Lazar, Karin de Coeyer, Crina Purice, Kristy van der Staal, Liezel Dsouza, Edith Seguin, Odette Van Nieuwholtz, Shao Qi, Rathika Ramasamy, Roma Januchowska, Selen Ediger, Shelley Penner, Leisa Hennessy, Ulla Kruys, Viera Hartingerova, and Vivian Droog. You are a great bunch of ladies.

This photo was captured on the H1-6 main road, just north of Mopani camp, near Bowkerkop. It is actually amazing how these Ostriches survive in this hostile environment of the Kruger National Park, with all the predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyaenas, jackals, etc. all around.

To end this note on a slightly more serious note, it will probably be my last posting for a while. Tomorrow I will be admitted to hospital for a series of cardio-vascular tests and pending the outcome I might find myself in a position and place where (for a while) I might not be able to keep in touch with you people or the site. Since January month, after I had the cardiac failure, I have never been myself and that has been the main reason for my less active participation here on TN lately. If you are so inclined, please pray for me and hopefully I will see you soon.

Warmest regards.

amazing face, TFS Ori

Dear Loot,
thank you for this wonderful image of a very cute and vital chick taken at a place where it belongs to. I love the straight look into its wide opened eye, the earthy colours of the animal and the moving dry grass in the background.
Reading of your stay at the hospital for the next days to come I send you all my best wishes for regaining your health. You are a great man of high talents and generous warm hearted feelings. Looking forward to see you back soon. God bless you my dear friend. Take care.
My best regards,

Oh Loot,
At first, this picture puts a smile on my face and more I read your note, more my smile disappeared. I wish you the best luck for those tests and I'm sure that everything will be OK, OK?

This is a beautiful portrait of this little one with great details and superb composition. Take car and my best thoughts will be with you,

Hello Loot,
Great portrait of this little fella!
Expression is surprised but attentive, maybe not used to photographers as of yet...
I notice the colour markings and fine details in the feather coat, and subject is well framed!

hi Lot, wcelnt shot , is his father a gepard ;-) ??

Good Morning my friend

I am not sure if I am too late with my message, before you are hospitalised.
We had a power failure last night and I was quite upset and disappointed as I would have loved to leave you the following:

Isaiah 41:10
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

While you’re in the hospital, remember that others care.
Hoping for your quick recovery and long that you won’t be there.

I am sure you will be overwhelmed with lots and lots of messages of good wishes, so I’ll keep it short this time.
Today I wish my name was Aalwina or Aalbertina then I was included in this "Chicky" dedication. This was a fantastic idea to dedicate this ostrich baby to all the ladies out there. I am sure "Shorty" is included here.

Good luck for the both of you. I’ll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Warmest regards.

Hi Loot,
So cute this little Ostrich-baby! Being a mother I just cannot resist to little creatures. Thank's for this excellent picture and the dedication. I hope that you haven't to stay too long at the hospital. You can for sure trust in medical technics. My husband had a heart-attack a month ago, and he could recover quite good, thanks to excellent medical help. I cross the fingers for you.

Hi Loot

You did great to post this terrific close-up!
Indeed, ostrich chicks are something i don't remember seeing on TN (except yours of course) and they really make fantastic subject for shooting!
I must say that i am a bit amazed by it's colors. Are you sure this one wasn't a bit mized with the cheetas you posted before :)))))
The close-up level here is excellent and the portrait it resulted in is exceptional!
I love the good clearance you managed to get in the BG in order to isolate him so nicely.
The details are very sharp and clear, the exposure is great and the composition is charming.
I guess the only nit here is the slight noise in his eyes, but i guess that has to be from some sharpenning or dodging to mage it look better.
Anyway, a brilliant post!

PS: i really don't mean to impose here, but you might want to check this one out :)

Hello Loot, Great shot with amazing sharpness and details. Excellent POV.
apart from that, very touching notes. I have seen quite a number of postings on TN dedicated to Mother's Day, but not one quite touching and heartfelt as this. Great to have known a friend like you in TN. May God always be with you and make you healthy and fit to enthral us with your beautiful pictures. You will dearly be missed.
Best wishes and take good care,
TFS, Smitha.

Hi Loot,
This is cuter than a dinglehopper, the pattern on the chick is beautiful, it has spots similiar too that of a cheetah. Hello Loot,

WOW! It is the most beautiful close-up of an ostrich that I ever saw!!! Look at the details! It is wonderful! The colors, the very well managed exposition, the great and soft bg, the wonderful composition you did by putting the head at the 1/3rd upper left of the picture makes it a winner for sure!!! The only thing is maybe the hay going through its throat but we can cantrol that!

Excellent Loot, it was a pleasure looking at this post!

Hello Loot,
Your chick is fabulous, you´ve done a perfect portrait, superb, there aren´t for me defects. They´re very differents to rhea chiks despite some similarities, specially in colors and patterns, between adults of both species.
Thanks for sharing, my friend, you´ve chosen very well the posted pic, I´ve never see a young ostrich.

Hello Loot
Your previous posting with dad and junior having a stroll was a fine photo and who would have thought that you could better it with this 'wow' portrait of 'Junior'. A captivating first class close up shot it is indeed. You really managed to show us the beauty of this little chick starting with the incredible details in the plumage and beak, the cheetah-like polka dots on its neck, and the amazing clarity in the eye. Of course the composition/cropping were perfectly done with every thing on the correct divisional lines. Sorry to hear of your setback and I sincerely hope you will be well and back where you belong, here on TrekNature.

Hi Loot,
Wonderful picture.

Hi Loot,
Excellent profile portrait. Junior's rich with detail..and he/she's giving us the eye :)
Well seen on this diffuse BG and well composed. Interesting color variations in this chicks plumage as well..
I'm glad you're back, thanx for keeping in touch.
You are in our thoughts & prayers,

Hi Loot,
This is my first time to see an Ostrich junior. A bit strange looking with those hairs and markings. The image is crystal clear. Glad to have you back and posting again. Take care and with all best wishes.

This is absolutely cute, with a big C!! I had taken shots of adults in the zoo (on TL) and ran a 'ugly bird' contest there, but this one is certainly very beautiful! Great details too!

Looking at your gallery I can't help being drawn to this chick (my marriage prevents any attraction to other types of chick).
Beautiful portrait of an Ostrich chick showing details and colours that we would not normally be aware of. The technical quality is superb and the expression on the chick's face makes this image very appealing.

Dear Loot
At the time you posted this photo I have not been a part of Trek Nature as yet. So I missed out on the dedication, but now that I have joined the rest of the mums and "chicks" on the site I can take this dedication for myself as well. A splendid portrait with fascinating details. This is definitely an ooh and aah photo and deserves a place in the section for "cutest animal faces" on Trek Nature. I wonder if there is a theme like that? Did not check it out, it just came to mind. The baby feathers shows nicely, and the detail is superb. Great face, great pose. I think if these if these birds could talk they would make wonderful comedians. They have a lot of humour in their actions. Thanks for sharing. Loved your note as well.

beautiful portrait , nice detail , excellent capture

Hi Loot
Gosh..I'm so embarrassed that I missed this dedication. An excellent and wonderful portrait of this young ostrich chick. The details are super sharp and colour perfect. I hope all the other TN chicks find this image as fantastic as I do. Have a great day.
