Hello Loot,
I'm glad you're back with us again!
What a wonderful experience it must be to watch these preparing their nest. This is a beautiful capture of the pair sitting closely together. I love the warm colours of the plumage and details are razor sharp. Very fine soft background too. Brilliant result of your "struggles"!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla
Great shot of these very beautiful birds Loot.
Fantastic colors and most wonderful details in the feathers and green color tones in the BG.
It seems that they don't want to take a look at eachother and therefore both look in a different direction :)
Sharpness and compo are excellent and the catchlight in the eyes of the two is lovely and adds a great deal to the entyre scene.
Best regards and have a nice weekend, Harry
Hello Loot
You're not the only-one who's pleased with this photo. In spite of the distance the photo is very sharp and the pose of the bird is lovely. And, indeed, beautiful BG and composition. Nice POV.

Hi Loot
Nice to see you back, my friend and i hope that the 2 weeks in the hospital will make you feel a lot better now :) (sorry, but i really don't know the reason why you were there, so i only hope that it was to make something better).
Anyway, it great to see you back and so enthusiastic :)
This is indeed a splendid ouble capture with a simply fantastic pose from the two of them...they appear as if ignoring each other :))
The details, colors and POV here are also exceptional and the DOF is impeccable - blurring out the bG so beautifuly.
A charming composition.
Bravo and TFS

PS: thanks for the amazing video! It's truely a rare thing...especially if recorded :)
Hello Loot,
I hope you are now well on the way to recovery and that your ticker is doing its job.
Great that you have shots like this one in your archive. Considering the limited availabilty of light this is a superb capture of two White-fronted Bee-eaters with fine sharpness and BG set in an excllent composition.
Well done and get well soon!
Ivan
Hi loot,
Welcome back, you have neen missed andI hope everything is ok.
The picture is wonderful with lovely colours and fine details.
I like the POV and pose too. The shallow DOF helps to bring out
the birds from the BG.
Very well done, my friend.

What a great come back Loot. I sincerely hope that you are well. I don't know about how it is in your country but here, hospitals are a nightmare… They are no room for everybody and some very sick people have to sleep in the corridors with no intimacy at all. This is just unacceptable… anyway…
This is a wonderful picture of this lovely couple with nice details, colors, POV and composition. Those birds are fantastic and I wish that we have them here… This is a very appropriated picture that goes along with a great note. Thanks,
Claudine

It is so good to have you back, Loot. : )
We missed you a lot. I knew nothing could keep you away for long.
This is a lovely capture, my friend. Considering the challenges you mentioned, the beauty of this shot attests to your skills as a photographer.
The composition is very engaging. Judging from their fluffed-up feathers, it seems that they were feeling the chill (as confirmed by your weather report) and were cuddling for warmth. Their back-to-back contact is endearing, and their beaks facing opposite directions give your picture a good balance. The details on the birds are excellent and the colors came out gorgeous despite the low light. The DOF gave you an absolutely magnificent BG, and I think the square framing works very well in this situation.
All in all, an outstanding picture which will go straight to my favorites. : )
TFS, and again, so happy you are back. : )

Welcome back Loot!
I am sure I can send this welcoming note on behalf of ALL your friends from Trek Nature. I for one has missed you and I am sure many others as well.
First of all, I just want to tell everybody, next time Loot is away – don’t worry, he has a very capable secretary, (his wife) that answers his mail while he is unable to do so himself. (Ha–ha) thank you Shorty for keeping us posted!
If there was one person hoping to be first in the queue to critique this posting it surely would have been me. Unfortunately I missed out as I do not have access to the internet on weekends. To all of you that jumped in front of me – Damm!
Everything I wanted to say is already said. Damm again! Ok, I’ll put it in my own words, even if I repeat somebody else’s critique.
The colours are superb and the background a lovely shade of green. Very good shot!
Wow! This is indeed a maginifique photo. Like always your notes are outstanding and very interesting.
You have outdone yourself once again! And I am so impressed with this spectacular shot. You deserve a few stars and more than one smiley.
Warmest regards
Aaltjie
Hello Loot
Good to have you back and to see that all cylinders seem to be firing in the correct order. Slowly but surely your Kruger Park "Travelogue" are growing into a magnificent illustrative journal and I am sure (the way I know you by now) there are still loads of great photos on its way to join those already on display. After all you did mention that you took some 4,845 photos. You just need to speed up the process a little so that we do not have to wait so long between postings. This is a beautiful photo of these two "love birds" although it seems like the honeymoon is over. Maybe the closeness is just a convenient arrangement to fight of the cold, but the way I see it, it doesn't look like the two are seeing eye to eye. I like the green tones of the photo (the birds and the background) and the focus are good when one considers the focal distance and the heavy lens you had to deal with. You have a sharp eye for a good photo and composition.
Greetings

Dear Loot,
good to have you back here on TN!
The picture you chose for telling us you are back again is magnificent, and emotionally and aethetically appealing in many aspects. The couple of birds touching each other tenderly with poses in reciprocity are catching the attention at once. Details are precisely reported with some well controlled, lovable softness remaining. There is an adorable clear composition with a minimalized number of elements. Lush well saturated colours of birds and vegetation. A very elegantly curved twig to serve as a stage.
This is an image of perfect tenderness and harmony - and well describing, with excellent notes. Wonderful.
Thank you, my dear friend. Hope you are well again.
With all my best wishes, and best regards,
Peter

This photo is amazing. You manage well with the 400 Iso and 425mm, great colored result under clouds. The birds are superb and their opposite pose is nice, they stand out of the pleasant green blurred background. The excellent sharpness offers great details in the feathers.

Hello Loot,
What a beauty! Thanks to the picture you dedicated to Adrian and me, I took a look at your gallery to see what you've posted since you've been back from the hospital and found these two beauties. I didn't want to miss the chance to critique this picture and add it to my favorites. Bee Eaters and King Fishers are my favorite birds and your picture popped out of my monitor when I saw it.
Composition:
Your composition is perfect! I can't find a nit here! I like the branch running along the lower third of the picture and the excellent poses of the two birds. The perfectly blurred background is indeed very appropriate for this shot! In my opinion this could easily be an award winning photo! I can't have enough looking at it!
Colors:
I can hardly imagine something more beautiful than two colorful Bee Eaters! Saturation is well adjusted and I also like the way the subjects look on a green background.
Contrast:
Excellent contrast in your picture! Add the contrast between two complimentary colors (red-green) and you have a perfect image!
Exposure:
In spite of the slow shutter speed you captured a great and sharp picture! The details are outstanding and the shadows are soft! The ISO 400 noise is barely visible. Did you use a noise removal software?
Focus:
Accurate focus on the subject! I guess that the fact that the birds were siting on the branch helped a lot while focusing. So did the lack of vegetation between lens and subject! I can't help from stressing how much I like the background! You controlled the DOF very good!
This is one of the best bird pictures I've seen on TN! A favorite of course! Thanks for sharing!
With Friendly Regards,
Eddie

Glad to see you are doing well and on top of your game here. This is simply perfect! Beautiful soft light. It has such vibrant accurate color saturation and sharp detail in the plumage. Perfectly composed and framed. I love the isolation against the perfect OOF green backround. A very high WOW factor here. Olympic judging would give it 10 out of 10.

Hello Loot,
I can hardly see birds are this close to each other casually in an open space, rubbing shoulders in a very friendly manner. To me, this is a very candid composition and having both of them looking in different direction is like they are having friendly grudges.
I like the flawless details exposed perfectly for my viewing pleasure and the background is so perfectly blurred out isolating these beautiful subjects. Since I like looking at them again and again, I hope you won't mind if I add this to my personal theme and one of my favorite.

Great shot and remarkable sharpness for shooting at almost 500 mm. You mention stretching it to ISO400? When I was in Kgalagadi I met a couple who are professional photographers, they had 12 megapixel Nikons and shot at ISO1000. I immediately set my Canon 400D (10MP) to ISO800 and shot all my wildlife photos at that setting, even with my 170-500 Sigma. You have seen my photos, notice a difference? In the old days of using TRI X film at 400 ASA you would get lots of grain, but I guess that is not the case with digital photography. Push up your ISO next time for the increase in shutter speed on your longer lenses.

Hello Loot,
several minutes ago, I have seen this perfect capture on main page of TN among Featured Favorite Photos. This is really wonderful shot of very beautiful couple of bee-eaters. There are two species of the genus Merops here; M. apiaster and M. persicus. First one is more colorful, as like yours. But I like very much all species of bee-eaters. They are one of my favourite birds. You captured them together. Back to back position look superb. Timing excellent as like POV/OOF. Splendid coloration, great sharp details of focus. Nicely composed and noted. Thanks so much for sharing. best wishes

Hello Loot
You have managed to capture these two bee-eaters in a most favourible pose and in lovely bright light, this way showing of the beautiful colours of their plumage. It is amazing how identical they look but on the other hand how different they are. I especially refer to the one on the left having brighter colours in its plumage. They look so comfortable with another, side by side, and your title is most appriopiate. Indeed a colourful and most pleasant image. Thanks for sharing.
