African Humming Bird Moth
Macroglossum trochilus

These are small moths. (38mm) Fore wings are banded and the thorax reddish brown. The abdomen is orange shading to brown. Hind wings are yellow at the base shading to orange and then brown. The black abdomanal fan (tail) is opened in flight. One can not see it when sitting. It can easily be mistaken for a bee in flight. At first I thought it was a bee. It feeds during the day on tubular flowers, espescially perennial basil and lavender in gardens. Larvae feed on Galium, Rubia and the exotic mirror bush. They can be found in a variety of veld types.

I visited a small Nature reserve only 70km from where I stay seeing that it was a public holiday today. Its a popular fresh water fishing resort. I was extatic to find the largest treasure of butterflies and moths I have ever seen in my life. And its exceptional for this time of the year. There must have been 300-400 of them fluttering around. There were mainly five species of butterflies to be found. I got so caught up in them I spend three hours in the meadow. I took nearly 300 photos. :))) I posted a photo of the meadow as a WS. Buttefly heaven!

Guess where I would be on the weekend? :)

Very good capture Gerhard. You nearly freezed the wing at 1/250. We have a very similar moth in Turkey, tried to shoot it a few times but could not get a result like this.
Well done.
Thank you for sharing.

Gerhard amazing macro, super sharpness and excellent frame.

Superbe photo Gerhard !
Très bien figé en plein vol.
Bravo !

I see you are making the 300D earn its money here, a very difficult shot well attchieved it is clearly seen TFS

Wonderful shot Gerhard, great colour and composition. The moth is beauty and very unusual looking. Great job.

In the thumb I was convinced it was a humming bird. I realize why you call them like that. How can you say that 35mm is a small moth, I would get a kitchen knife to defend myself if one of those entered through my window :-D
Very nice picture, I dont know how you manage to get this timing. Excellent.

Hi there Gerhard. How are you doing?
This is a great catch. It's the first time I see this moth and it's a fantastic looking moth. It must have been fast and you froze the action perfectly. Great colors too. Very well done! TFS!

Hello Gerhard. Everything about this moth is so strange, especially its tail! Looks like a shaving brush. Good catch with the moth feeding. And look at all those autumn colours on its body and wings. Wonderful...

Great shot Gerhard! I checked out the workshop and it looks like my kinda place..Sounds like a really great place to get "lost" in chasing these critters around..Fantastic colors, composed very well and a great capture at 1/250th for a flying bug! Very well done.

Hi Gerhard. I like your composition here, DOF and the detail you have on the moth. Getting them sharp while in flight isn't easy but you even have highlights in his eyes. We get hummingbird hawkmoths here in the UK in the summer. I met my first one a couple of summers ago and was quite amazed, saw it from a bedroom window and couldn't work out what it was. I like the sound of your nature reserve!

What a weird looking creature. :) great action shot.. very sharp, fantastic details !!

Ek is jaloers, ek moet meer gaan oefen. dit is nou amper somer hier, lekker tyd om buite te speel met die kamera :D

Wonderful capture Gerhard,
Beautiful looking moth. You've captured the details very well and very sharp.
Excellent colours and very well composed shot.
Thanks for posting

Really a very nice picture. The sharpness is very good, the colours also.
Very nice

Curious shot. It took me a while to work out what it was before reading the note as it seemed some body parts were missing. The colours, exposure and composition are beautiful and you really captured the meal extremely well.
Regards Toni

thanks for the meadow shot, its always interesting to see the environment that photographers are working in.

I guess its not the sharpest image you've presented on TN, but its damn difficult to get moths in flight/feeding, so well done. I do like the composition though, considering the density of flowers in the field you did well with the OOF background.

This is great Gerhard! Excellent composition and moment. You froze this moth in very nice pose. Colourfull, detailed with warm light. Perfect shot.

This shot has lovely colour tones to it Gerhard. Very good 'in flight' capture with excellent detail of the proboscus ? (spelling) in the flower. Well done on this excellent shot. I like the workshop too. Enjoy your weekend.

Beautiful capture, very nice BG colours and great POV.
Well done.

fantastic shot!

amazing macro, super sharpness and excellent frame.

Superb shot. Everything is perfect. Great work!

Incredible photo. I was in Tanzania in 1996 and how I wish to return now with my digital camera [Nikon D70] and get far better pictures.

Wonderful capture! I saw my first humminbird moth during the first week of this month in a forest too. I couldn't shoot it. Your shot really satisfied me and washed off my pains. Cheers
