Spotted Bush Snake / Philothamnus semivariegatus

Today's posting I would like to dedicate to Bayram Gocmen (boreocypriences). In the short time that I have been part of Trek Nature, I have learn to know him as a noble and humble gentleman who has an extreme passion for his work, and that he takes pride in what he does. I have also come to learn that he has a great love for his sisters Jane and Yasemin and his mother, of which he speaks often in his notes.

His gallery is mostly filled with the most interesting and fascinating reptiles, some of which I never even knew existed. If I had to compare my Bush Snake to some of the exotic or scarce snakes he has in gallery, it would be like comparing a "Rolls Royce" to a "bicycle". There is just no comparison, and although not uncommon to our region this might just be my first and only snake capturing opportunity I'll ever have. So this one is for your Bayram.

It has become part of a routine especially over weekends to take a stroll through the garden with the camera looking for something to photograph. I find it extremely interesting to see on which plants, specific insects prefer to sit and which plants never attracts insects at all. My eyes and nose is always between the leaves looking for the possible hiding places for the great variety of insects we have in our garden.

On Saturday Loot left to the Thulasihleka Pan, a great spot for photographing Pelicans, Lesser Jacana's, Kingfishers and other waterfowl.

After a downpour of rain, I thought I might get some nice shots of some leaves or maybe a flower with some water droplets and took my stroll around the garden. Everything was really beautiful and cleanly washed after the rains and I just wanted to stick my nose in everything and even deeper to see if I could see something special to photograph. Just as I stuck my nose in to explore, the snake pushed his face out of the plant from where it was lying. My oh my, what a delightful moment I encountered. I must be honest a frightening moment as well for a few seconds, as I never expected to come face to face with a snake on one of my walks in the yard.

This was really such an exciting but at the same time nervous moment. I wanted to get even closer, but because I do not have knowledge about snakes I was not sure if this one is going to spit of bite me. Its tongue was darting about all the time, so I did not want to take chances. The garden help did not really make it easier, because he just stood behind me and told me franticly that it was a green mamba.

It was only when Loot arrived home from his photography excursion, and upon downloading the photos he told me that it is a harmless and non-toxic Bush Snake. In my personal opinion I think this is such a gorgeous green snake, with beautiful yellow eyes, and lovely markings on its body.

I have talked so much about my adventure, one would think I was fighting an Anaconda in the Amazon, but to me it was a real exciting experience. I am only going to give a little general summary about this beauty. I have seen a few of this specific type of snake's photos on Trek Nature, thus if you need more information, you can just look it up by going back to some of the previous postings of other members.

General summary and interesting facts:
These snakes are active, diurnal hunters, and have great vision. When foraging for food they often undulate their necks from side to side in a serpentine fashion while keeping the body perfectly still, giving an appearance of foliage blowing in the wind.

Prey includes frogs, chameleons, geckos, nesting birds, fish and insects.

Individuals sleep in crevices in logs and trees or on the outer edges of branches high up in trees. They will drop to the ground if approached by predators. When cornered, they will inflate their throats to expose the brightly coloured interstitial skin and do not hesitate to bite.

These snakes do not pose a threat to humans, but are often needlessly killed in the mistaken belief that they are Boomslangs (Dispholidus typus) or Green Mambas (Dendroaspis angusticeps).

They are especially adapted for an arboreal existence. They have strongly keeled ventral scales that enable them to climb up the rough bark of trees. They are notorious for climbing up bricked walls and seeking shelter among the asbestos or tin roofs of outbuildings, where they search for geckos.

All species of Green Snake are egg layers and produce clutches of between 3-16 eggs. The hatchlings range in length from 150-300mm, depending on the species.

Taken from the book: A Guide to Reptiles of Southern Africa - Graham Alexander & Johan Marais. Published by Struik Publishers.

I hope you enjoy looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

Hi Anna/Neighbour

Great composition with vibrant colour and excellent detail. The eye contact is just great. As my garden backs onto a river we have grass snakes - but we very rarely see them - thankfully (even though they are completely harmless)!

Hello Anna,

Hi Anna,
You have captured the snake and its habitat very well. The snake both camouflages and stands harmoniously along the direction of the edges of broad green leaves. TFS

Hi Anna,

This is an amazing shot that I am sure Bayram will adore. This snake is so perfectly cammouflaged by the leaves and still you captured him in perfect detail. The eye, the black specks, the shape are all superb. There is a 3D effect that makes him appear to be floating. An absolutely fantastic photo.

Hi Anna,

Thank you very much for this pleasant dedication for me, I really appreciate it since snakes are my 1st number favourite subject between the reptiles. Also thanks for your kind and warm words that you used for describe to me:). By the way, I have to state that I prefere to use a bycicle instead of a Rolls Royce because it does not use a pollutant for locomotion and also a good sport:P:). On the other hand, this is perfect shot of this snake species which I have not ever seen before my friend! The colour-pattern of this snake is excellently adapted to substrate structures for avoiding from the enemies or umbushing its prey:). wonderful camouflaged species indeed.
Thanks a lot once more your kind dedication to me Anna.

My best wishes & regards,

Bayram

What an amazing photo. We do not have snakes here in New Zealand, so I would never have the luxury or fright of finding one in my garden. The colours are vibrant and beautiful. very sharp and clear. It really does show us the increable ability nature has to camoflauge itself. The photo has an interesting POV. Lucky you for seeing him and that he wasnt the posionious variety.

Lovely shot of the camouflaged Bush Snake.
Nicely composed and I like the pose you have capture with the snake moving diagonally from the bottom corner of the frame.
nice detail and I love the stunningly vivid greens.

Hello Anna,

Very beautiful composition. Excellent sharpness. In this universe of green the gold eye of the snake is striking.

Hello Anna,
This is very good, not only technically but artistically as well. Very good depth of field, everything in focus which in this kind of image I think is quite important. Lovely shades of green throughout and the composition is perfect. The lines coming from the bottom right and fanning out, the Snake obligingly doing the same. I like the lines in this so much I posted a workshop with any breaks in the 'flow' of the lines cloned out, simply out of curiosity rather than an attempt to improve this fine image.
Kind regards,
Adrian

Hi Anna
Wonderful shot with lovely natural color tones and fine detail
Well seen

Anna, the thumbnail image gives no clue to the real theme. My God, I was stunned to see a green snake when I opened the large image (I'm mortally afraid of snakes!).
My fear notwithstanding, this is a powerful image of a snake camouflaged so well in the large green leaves.
The image is not only superb in terms of the subject it presents but is also a highly artistic creation.
Thanks for sharing this beauty and best regards
Ram

Hi Anna,
that's one hell of a cool shot, Anna. As you were told by now by many TN watchers, the DOV and composition as well as the posture of the snake are absolutely delightful. I say no more, but thanks for the detailed note too.

Hi Anna,
I saw the thumbnail and could not see that snake, very well camouflaged this one.
Seems we both did a dedication the same day as you've said..

Hi Anna, a very impressive capture of this Spotted Bush Snake, even more so when I read your notes. I don't know snakes either so tend to avoid them if possible, so not knowing the species, I can just imagine how you were feeling as you took this shot. I like how you captured this one, with him climbing up the large leaf. He blends in so well, yet you have nicely isolated him. The colours are excellent as is the sharp detail throughout. Very excellent work.

Thanks, John

Hi Anna,

Great shot. The different shades of green in the bg with the bright slender snakle in the foreground looks great. Sharply focussed. I am always fascinated by snakes, and other venomous creatures like spiders scorpions etc. Thanks for sharing.

Anna,

Thank you for such wonderful words you left under one of my pictures. It is always so nice to read a critique such as yours - thanks!
I think your picture and your dedication are wonderful. As I have mentioned before in other posts, Bayram deserves every bit of it - it is such a privilege to read his notes and watch his amazing pictures. I guess this is what makes TN such a great place.
Your shot fits this dedication very well. You've captured this snake in a great setting - the pose and location within the leaves makes for a very peaceful and enjoyable shot. This picture looks like its out of a nature magazine - fabulous work.
Again, thank you for your kind words and thanks for sharing this awesome shot.

Hi Anna!

During my holiday on the island of Krk (Croatia), after having left Slovenia, I also met a couple of snakes. One of them was the dangerous Horn-Viper (translated from German "Hornviper"). I tried to take some pictures of snakes and therefore know how difficult it is to get a good one. I'm impressed by the beauty of your picture! The colours - green on green - are superb and you made a great job concerning the composition and the lighting. Your picture is accompanied by very interesting notes and I'm particularly happy to read that you underline the fact that humans often needlessly kill them!

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Anna. I was thinking you were posting some leaves until I opened up the image. The green color of the snake blends so well with the blade of the leaves making it a good camouflage for such a tiny snake. Bayram is a big fan and he should be thrilled by this dedication. Super sharp image in excellent crop and the framing is pleasant for viewing. Another superb post complemented by useful and interesting notes as always. Thanks for sharing and best regards. Jusni

Hallo Miss Piggy
I think it is time that you change the wording on your intro page. The fellow members are going to think that you are a liar when reading your statement "I'm only a beginner and not much of a photographer at all. So far most of my photos were pure luck shots." Now did you not know that Pinnochio's nose grew very long when he told lies? Because if I look at this specific image and read what everybody else have to say about it, I think your nose will soon be out of reach. Ha-ha. Another wonderful photo in action. Well done!
You are very lucky to be able to capture shots like these. I think there are a number of fellow- members that envy you. Thank you for the interesting note as well. Information on the subject is always much appreciated and in this case information on your experience capturing this snake.

Hello Anna

Nee jong, van slange wil ek niks weet nie. Die goed maak my gril.

Alles sou bewe.

Sorry for being a bit late...i was on a long hike yesterday and i was quite tired :)

This is really a fantastic presentation! Tree snakes are really rare here on TN and i'm VERY glad to see one and read such interesting info about it. I'm sure Bayram is also charmed.
The photo here is very good i think because it presents the subject in such a natural place. The Blending of the two and the POV create a superb composition for such a scene.

I like the green palette and the way the snake has lifted its head with great eye contact. The clarity, sharpness and focus are quite fine. Anna,
Fantastic shot with or without the snake, obviously the snake is the icing on the cake all for us to admired. The sharpness is incredible, though the snake is trying to blend in but your clarity if so good here he's not fooling anyone. We can see it perfectly. Love the colors and contrast on this shot. composition is also right on. Thanks and well worth or the nice comments recieved.

Hello Anna !
This is a wonderful picture and a great dedication to Bayram, who is one of the most talented photographers here on TN. I think we all like his wonderful work. But your picture is just as wonderful as his, I love everything here - the vivid colors, the composition, the pose of the snake, his big yellow eye, his sharp look... A real pleasure ofr the eye. Very well done !
Valerie.

Hello Anna,

What a surprise as I open this one!
I didn't notice the snake in the thumbnail, it is awesome...

Hello Anna

This is a fantastic shot for your perspective and colours. I really like snakes and this is a beautiful specimen. The snake blends in superbly with the leaves, especially the way you have captured it.

Wonderful colours and great composition. It looks like a painting to me.

Hello Anna
indeed a photo very detailed. The snake nearly seems to be put in rests for the release. Beautiful the game of lights and the details of the friendly little bush snake who slips between the leaf of this particular plant. Beautiful the several tonalities of green and the framing.
