[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the second post – please see http://www.treknature.com/images/photos/4/barbet-crested-004_s_.jpg for First post. This is a typical post for the Crested Barbet when he lands on the feeding tray, smooth and upright, with the crest flat, neck stretched-out a bit. He will hop to the food and attack it with vigour, all the time looking around fro intruders or enemies. Barbets belong to Capitonidae , there are 83 species world wide, 42 off found in Africa, 10 off here in SA. They are small, stout bodied bird with powerful bills & large heads. They are mostly frugivorours. The are nest hole breeders & excavate their own nest holes in trees. They are primary nest hole dwellers, meaning they create the hole, and secondary nest hole breeders use the nest after them. Kuif is a compulsive hole maker. We buy dried sisal (agave) logs for them. I have seem that they will start excavating within 5 minutes of me leaving the nest still on the ground! They are regularly parasitized by Honeyguides. This I often see, not that the honey guide has been successful on my property. She really gives them the chase of their lives. Both partners will chase her to keep her from entering the nest hole. They “bitch” the whole time while they are chasing her. Sorry, there is not other expression that describes being annoyed so well that I know. The crested Barbet has a voice like an alarm clock going off. It is a rather pleasing trilling note, and they can keep it up several minutes. They sit right in the top of the tree, and sing their song of content. But this will change immediately to a shrilling sharp alarm when disturbed by the honey guide or when a cat would venture on the property. You get to know their mood so well, that you well investigate this call & chase off the intruder.

Wat een kleuren pracht, goede compositie, uitstekende note. Callie je bent goed man.

Callie, this is a great supplement to your previous posting, as we get to see more of the beautiful guy's profile. Outstanding rendering of the colors and patterns of the plumage, and as always the supreme DOF. Plus the bird makes quite a fine diagonal through the frame. Very nice.

Great capture of this chap, nicely set off against a clean background. Focus and DOF spot on. From this angle you can really see his all purpose tool, the strong bill ;-)

It's very interesting about her voice like an alarm clock!I can imagine it.
But really (as always about your animals shots)I havenot seen before this kind of bird.
Her diagonal pose in the frame is an excellent point here,with skilfully managed the DOF,I have to say as usual for this great shot that it's EXCELLENT,but I think that it's really EXCELLENT:)
Both shot(with yesterday) are great,here very well composed the bird.

Handsome bird with splendid colouration. I liek the sharpness of the image and the DoF is spot on. fantastic.

I think you are becoming a master with the bird photos. Amazing detail of the head fethers, natural pose and good use of what looks like dim available light
