4th Anniversary - Celebration time

Hi, all you wonderful people from TrekNature.

It feels fantastic to be 4 years old. No, I didn't find the cure for eternal youth and suddenly regressed in age or years, but today is my 4th anniversary here on the site. The cliché "Time Flies" is no half truth and it is almost unbelievable that the past 4 years has hurried past so swiftly. Can someone please tell father Time to slow down just a little bit?

On 23 January 2006, I joined this magnificent site and I never looked back ever since. Here I have met so many wonderful people, learned so much about the incredible, ever awesome nature of our planet earth, gained a good measure of knowledge about photography in general and digital photography specifically, and obtained such valuable experience with regards to post processing techniques and software. You people have taught me so much, shared and offered so much love and friendship to me (and also to Anna), and I owe you all a tremendous, heartfelt "THANK YOU", born out of my deepest and sincere appreciation and gratitude.

Therefore, this image is dedicated, with love, to all of you, the entire TrekNature membership and also all the hard working staff, who are ever present and active in the background. I really value each and every one of you. No matter whether we ever rubbed shoulders or not, whether we became friends or not, or whether we ever interacted or not. Much learning came from just reading and appreciating the advice or guidance provided via your notes, comments, critiques, or replies. Sometimes even without necessarily contributing towards your specific postings or various contributions. The late Jim Reeves once sang a song that included these incredible words: "A stranger is just a friend you do not know". To those members whom I've not yet acquainted, I want to say that there is still a lot of water that yet must flow under the bridge - who knows where the future might still lead us on our different journeys. Trekkies are the greatest, most remarkable bunch of people.

This image was captured during one of the many magnificent sunsets we experienced on our most recent visit to the Kruger National Park. Obviously, because sunset happens so close to the gate closing time, one can never meanders too far away from any camp when one endeavours to acquire some sunset images. This means that one is actually somewhat limited in ones choices or opportunities. This sunset was captured on the H1-4 main road, ±3km north of the entry gate to the Satara rest camp.

What Determines Sky's Colours At Sunrise And Sunset?
ScienceDaily (Nov. 15, 2007)
- The colours of the sunset result from a phenomenon called scattering, says Steven Ackerman, professor of meteorology at UW-Madison. Molecules and small particles in the atmosphere change the direction of light rays, causing them to scatter.

Scattering affects the color of light coming from the sky, but the details are determined by the wavelength of the light and the size of the particle. The short-wavelength blue and violet are scattered by molecules in the air much more than other colors of the spectrum. This is why blue and violet light reaches our eyes from all directions on a clear day. But because we can't see violet very well, the sky appears blue.

Scattering also explains the colors of the sunrise and sunset, Ackerman says. "Because the sun is low on the horizon, sunlight passes through more air at sunset and sunrise than during the day, when the sun is higher in the sky. More atmosphere means more molecules to scatter the violet and blue light away from your eyes. If the path is long enough, all of the blue and violet light scatters out of your line of sight. The other colors continue on their way to your eyes. This is why sunsets are often yellow, orange, and red. And because red has the longest wavelength of any visible light, the sun is red when it’s on the horizon, where its extremely long path through the atmosphere blocks all other colors". Source

Why Does the Sunset Change Colors?
Light, the Light Spectrum, and Our Atmosphere

Humans have always wondered about their environment, especially the sky. Every day, our sky goes from solid blue to a smorgasbord of reds, oranges, yellows, pinks, and who knows what other colors during sunset. As we shall see, the reason that the sky is blue during the day and the reason that the sky isn't blue during sunrise and sunset are both linked. It all has to do with the scattering of light into its specific colors of the rainbow by atmospheric particles.

Blue Skies, Vivid Sunsets
Visible light is composed of all colors in the visible light spectrum, and the breakup of white light into its respective colors can be viewed through a prism - breaking the white light into the familiar rainbow colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. This listing is from longest wavelength to the shortest wavelength. During the day, the shorter wavelengths; blues and violets, are scattered by molecules and other particles in the air. This scattered light reaches our eyes from all directions on a clear day in the afternoon, and we view the sky as blue. Longer wavelength visible light, like reds and oranges, is not affected by the relatively few scatterings of a few chance molecules.

Sunset and Sunrise: More Atmosphere, More Scattering
During sunrise and sunset, because of the angle of the sun's rays, sunlight must pass through much more of our atmosphere before reaching our eyes. This means that the sunlight has the chance to be scattered more completely, coming into contact with even more molecules and particles in the air. This makes the scattering effect become even more pronounced, and these molecules scatter away all of the blue and violet light. The longer wavelengths of red and orange light are not affected by the long path through the atmosphere, and are still detected by our eyes. This is the reason that the sunsets and sunrises can look red, orange, yellow or even pink. Source

Hi Loot,

This is a wonderful sunset picture. Everything is well composed with the land on a line of third and the tree bending into the picture. The red sky is nice and vivid and stands out very well against the silhouetted foreground and tree. I also like how the sun is framed by the bent tree.
Brilliant capture and TFS
Congrats on your 4th year.

hello Loot,
a splendid sunny subject for your anniversary, I like this opposition that is created in the pallet of warm colors, beautiful composition, congratulations and keep photographing! TFS

perfecto sunset,
color y siluetas de lujo...
feliz aniversario,
saludos Loot.

Hi Loot,
I celebrated mine almost a week ago. It is great to see that we, long lasting members, are still standing strong. Although we both have dropped in our presence, we still have the love for this wonderful site.
we both know that TrekNature has fueled our learning curve in photography, knowledge of the world and knowledge of nature. But I also know that many other members have gained a lot of knowledge through your critiques and photos. You are not just a member posting photos. You provide members with insight in nature, insight in South Africa and insight in the skills of photography.
I am especially glad that you celebrated your 4th birthday with a tree photo. As you probably know, a subject very close to my photography heart. This tree is shaped most beautifully and you have captured it at a moment that is was hugging the sun. So basically, your tree is the real Suntoucher. Technically the photo is perfect, with a pin sharp silhouette and spot on exposure control over the bright sun.

Hi Loot

Congratulations on your 4th birthday. A great shot to celebrate too, a wonderful African sunset, one day I will get there....but there are so many amazing places to visit. Like you, this site has fueled by desire to learn and travel, I can't get enough of it. I know you are ofetn busy and post as often as you'd like, but when you do everyone has a look. Thanks for being here and I look forward to meeting you in person one day.

Hi Loot,

Dear Loot,

I'm one of those members You still didn't meet through TN - God knows why, because Your wife Anna is on my favorite photographers list. I'll also be 4 years old on TN in 2010, although I've had some long breaks (+ I don't upload a new image every day).

After the introduction get my deepest regards and congratulations for Your 4th birthday on the site. Your shot's exceptionally well composed and balanced light-wise, colors and silhouettes are beautiful, the whole image's something extraordinary and a photo to learn from. I also should like to say a big thanx for sharing an in-depth and personal note, beside the splendid photo.

I wish You and Your family health and happiness for the new year, and of course, great lights in order to take such fantastic photos as this one. I bookmark it with a little green star.

Best wishes from Hungary (Europe), László

Hi Loot, and congratulations my friend for the festive occasion, not an easy thing to achieve in succesfull nature photography, around 160 captures and all more beautiful, aestethical and enchanting than each other, but then you really have the knack for it. Your present choice is no exception, the warmly hued evening sky silhouetting that off-center wonderful tree perfectly, forming a beautiful composition. Your kind dedication have done wonders for me while I'm trying to recuperate from a terrible cold, thanks indeed my friend!

Hi Loot,
you have waited for the right moment until the sun sets between the branches. that gives a powerful composition. The lighting is so effective and it is further enhanced with sharpness and clarity. The trees gives a very amazing graphical and abstract art to the eyes.
it gives a wonderful feeling looking and gazing at your stunning composition of nature. Nature give us all the opportunities, and we must be critical and intelligent enough to exploit it.
Just like what you did.
A big congratulations for this wonderful image that will be etched in viewers' memory as far as "sunset" is mentioned.
So another congratulations for the effort done and your willingness to share this special properties of yours.

Ciao Loot, congratulations for your four year on TE, thanks for all your splendid photo, fascinating sunset with lovely silhouette of beautiful tree, great colors, superb composition, very well done, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Hi MF Loot,

Very impressive photograph, such intense and fiery colours. Nice strong silhouettes too, they really stand out.
Quite a busy scene due to the trees and leaves, which adds to it's beauty.
Nice focus on the big tree which has a fantastic shape, and sun looks perfectly positioned.
it all looks beautifully managed and presented, like something you'd see in The National Geographic.
Truly a photogenic moment MF, well seen. Also great notes, as usual.
The quality of your images in both technically and educative has been great and the variety of species a great contribution to this site.
We are learning a lot with you MF! "
As you’ve said for me, also “You are a wonderful asset to this site and I sincerely hope that the association will continue for many years to come".
In addition to this, I have to admit that I feel as though I have known you all my life:).
Thanks a lot for all contributions to us and heartfelt friendship MF! and
Congratulations! for your 4th anniversary on TN!
All the best MF Loot!

I like it very much, thanks and enjoy the weekend

One thing about South Africa and especially Kruger National Park, where it is clear and smog free, one gets the most natural colours at sunrise and sunset. This sunset is an excellent example, well done!

hello Loot

congratulations for your 4th TN Anniversary, i remember in summer 2000
when i start with internet one day i have found a Flash movie clip named Africa
(since i lost that link), it present in lovely way Africa and its landscapes,

You have chosen a beautiful picture of this African Sunset. The large tree in the forground Helps to make this a fantastic one. Such rich colours it looks like the sky is on fire. well taken TFS.

Dear Loot
Congratulations on your 4th anniversary on the site which is a major milestone. You have a wonderful portfolio and your Satara sunset adds one more stunning image to it. Everything in this "picture" is perfect. The colours and composition is very artistic and deserves a double WOW.I like the overall image, the great light and the perfect timing. You are a precious member to the site, for various reasons and not just because I am saying so, but plenty others as well. I want to quote a view true words given by Niek Bouwen (suntoucher) on your 1st anniversary and I could not have said it better. I am sure others will be in agreement with this statement: "Thank you for all your beautiful photos that are always accompanied with the most interesting stories and information. Also thank you for your wonderful critiques, which are always a pleasure to read. Photos, notes and critiques give us an insight on the kind hearted person behind it. Your contribution to TN was, is and hopefully for a long time, will be an asset to the quality of this site" There you are – these words are not a lie. Thanks for sharing. Love. Anna

best wishes and have a good night

Hello Prof Loot,
Congrats for your 4th anniversary on this site. The picture in reference happens to be unique in many senses and well chosen for the occasion; the sky with ever-changing frequencies of the sunset color tones and a brilliant composition of black silhouette in the foreground carries the well conveyed meaning of our subsistence due to the efforts of the background staff 24 x 7 at TN website; else it looses its existence into the background of blackness after the sunset (s) from different nations on this world; but it works, works and works throughout without any interlude. We do salute & thank all of them who have made this nature site wonderful, consistent & a great global family. God bless all & thanks to you Prof Loot once again, for your great support to this site with your high educational critiques, notes & visuals :) Our sincere regards to Anna & you. Have a great Sunday!

Hello Loot!

Big congratulations for four years of great work for this site. You're well known here for your beautifull photos and great critiques. To be honest I think your critiques are best on entire TN - always interesting, educative and well written. Thank you for four years!

What can I say about this picture - it's real gem. True African heart and soul captured in one image. Africa as most of all known it from books, tv and dreams. Beautifull scene, perfectly composed of black silhouettes of trees and amazing shades of orange colours of sunset. I miss only one thing here - big cat resting on tree. This is perfect picture to hang it on a wall or place as background on computer's desktop and watch and dream and watch and dream........

Hi Loot and a belated Happy TN Anniversary!!!!

Time is catching up on us, my friend. I feel like just a few weeks ago i was celebrating my first year and look at us now :)
Yet, it's the magic of this community that lasted all this time. And the perfect example for that is the fact that even if we don't post or comment that often, we still keep in touch with some friends made here (i'm actually planing a trip to Scotland together with Niek as we speak).

And as for your contribution...it speaks for its own! High quality photos, rare sights, magical moments, all accompanied by really well thought of and elaborate notes.
Just like this one here: what a treat to the eye! I really closed my eyes and imagined i was there, feeling the warmth of the air and the serenity of the place.
I really like the exposure here and how the silhouette of this beautiful tree stands out from the red sky. The twisty branches are very attractive while the subtle graduation in the sky makes a lovely BG.

Thanks for all this, my friend!

Hi dear Loot ,

It is a spendid sunset shot.
It has wonderful colours and excellent composition.
A perfect scenery

Hola Loot,

Hi Loot,
This is an amazing picture and congrats for your 4 th Anniversary. After looking at this I noticed that I missed celebrating mine last December!
What I Like about this picture is way the tree and son is positioned, it looks like they are connected i can see some branches of tree in the back coming out of sun!
Congrats once again MF

Hello Loot,
What a gorgeous sunset image you have posted. This is one of those photos that you would like to hang on your wall.
Excellent composition, the silhouetted tree fits perfectly into the frame. The vivid colors are simply gorgeous as if the sky is on fire.
I can easily imagine a leopard sleeping lazily on one of the large branches.

Hi Loot,
Amazing African sunset silhouette! The fiery reds and orange range of colors, punched out tree and terrain are so intense. I don't think I have ever seen our skies that fiery over here in the Pacific Northwest, mostly pinks mixed with blues. Anyway congratulations on both your super image and your 4th year on Treknature.
Paul :)
