The family Charadriidae comprises 67 species, of which the Blacksmith Plover is one of the 11 species breeding in the southern hemisphere. Blacksmith Plovers are resident in South Africa, moving only small distances from their breeding territories.

Incubation usually starts when the first egg is laid, but only when the last egg is laid are both parents diligently tending the eggs, taking shifts of 20 to 80 minutes each. Incubation takes about a month and chicks of the same clutch all hatch within a day, and sometimes within a few hours. Blacksmith Plover chicks are precocial, leaving the nest soon after hatching. Although Blacksmith Plovers do not feed their chicks or show them where food is, they brood the chicks when small and incapable of maintaining body temperature and the adults are particularly defensive, alarming when danger is still 600 to 800 meters away.

Hello George,

This is a wonderful photo of the little plover. I like the POV, sharpness, colours and background. Great capture.Best regards Siggi

The reflection and those shimmering gold colors from the reflected light is just fabulous friend George. The golden light like this lasts only a short while and you have capitalized the situation really well in framing this fine bird. The ripples behind the trail is an added bonus to this top drawer composition.
Well done and have a great weekend. Jusni

Hello George, very beautiful this Johnni - the Walker. Perfect capture probably at dawn, helped by the hangover of the subject. Really a beautiful image. Ciao Paolo

Hi George.
You have pictured a very attractive scene. First of all I mean the charming birdy, its action and traces on the water surface. Timing is really nice. I also like backlight and warm sunlight as well as good selection of aperture value. DOF covers all significant details. Kind regards and TFS.

Hi George,
I really like the fantastic colours of sunset in your picture. The young plover looks so fragile.

Hello george,

Hello George,
Apart from the excellent sharpness, the lighting of the evening sun makes this image unusual and attractive.
This young Blacksmith Plover really glows! I like its reflectionin the calm water, the striding action, and the composition with the ripples that he leaves behind as he steps ashore.
Thanks and enjoy your weekend,

Hi George,
what a nice view of this Johny Walker - oh sorry Jonni the Walker :) Its walking almost like a human-being. Perfect capture! Also interesting a reflection in the water.
Thanks for sharing.

hello George

once again superb timing too shoot this photo
because of the Johnny Walker pose (lol)
of this baby bird but also because of that
wonderful warm light, the baby bird being
againts daylight (in French en contre-jour)
you managed superbly your camera to obtain
details from it and the warmer color tones contour,
photo shot with fine POV, great focus sharpness details,

p.s. merci for your kind words to my latest photo

Hi George,
Very nice colours and fine detail, good POV and composition

Hello George,
In thumbnail I decided to look for the reason why you left the space behind the bird and it was immediately apparent. Beautiful reflections on the water and halo of light around the bird. It looks like Johnny has called it a day. Well done!

Hello George,
you go against the light. Normally this would produce a disaster, especially for me. but this presentation is well complemented with the beauty of its surroundings. The ripples , the golden and shiny mud beach and also the silvery hairs around the bird.
This johnny is really excellently shot with its stride well frozen. And another treasure is the reflection.
such a nice combination of things that push your shot to be exciting and splendid.

Hellow George,
Great plover image with available natural light, nice soft overall light and yet good details.Nicely timed and well composed.
Excuse my ignorance but where do I find your explanation
[ thanx a lot for your effort ] in what section?
