Woolly-necked Stork / Ciconia episcopus

After being away from the site for a while, I am back to continue with the series on the birds of the Kruger National Park. The Woolly-necked Stork is the 39th in this sequence which I am currently sharing. Enjoy!

I never had the opportunity to photograph this type of bird before and therefore I was most delighted to have the chance to shoot this particular one while it was posing in the sun with its wide opened wingspan. It was captured just outside of the Pafuri Border Post in the far north-eastern region of the Kruger Park. This specific day the weather was also playing along just fine and the sunlight was wonderful, creating a beautiful shine on the bird's feathers.

Distribution and habitat
Occurs from India and Sri Lanka east to the Philippines, as well as in sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal to Ethiopia south to southern Africa. Here it is uncommon in Mozambique, northern and southern Zimbabwe, northern Botswana, and northern Namibia (including the Caprivi Strip). It can occupy almost any wetland habitat, generally preferring flood plains, rivers, pans, ponds, dams, lagoons, swamp forests, mangrove swamps, tidal mudflats, and also estuaries.

It mainly eats insects and other invertebrates, doing most of its foraging by slowly walking through water or vegetation, stabbing at prey. The following food items have been recorded in its diet: Invertebrates: insects and their larvae, molluscs, worms, and crabs. Vertebrates: fish, frogs, red toads, lizards, and snakes.

Monogamous and usually a solitary nester, although it may breed in lose colonies of 4-5 pairs. The nest is built by both sexes, consisting of a platform of sticks with a central bowl lined with fine twigs, grass and green leaves. It is typically placed in the fork of a horizontal branch of a large tree, 10-50 metres above ground or water. Egg-laying season is from August-December. It lays 2-4 eggs, which are incubated by both sexes for about 30-31 days. The chicks are fed and brooded by both parents, leaving the nest to roost in a nearby tree at about 55-65 days old, becoming fully independent roughly three weeks later.

Not threatened globally, although Near-threatened in South Africa, due to low population numbers largely caused by habitat destruction.

In Afrikaans it is known as Wolnekooievaar. Source

I hope you enjoyed looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

Hello Anna,
I must admit this is simply an awesome shot!! Love the wide opened wing pose which gives us a wonderful view of it's gorgeous plumage. It reminds me of a musical conductor as he readies his orchestra for a performance.
Excellent focus and composed perfectly. What a magnificent looking bird. The iridescent bluish feathers in contrast to the red wing bones are a real eye catcher. Well done!!

Hello Anna,
Welcome back!
I have never seen the African Woolly-necked Stork before, let alone in such a pose!
Well captured while sunning itself, the underside of its wings showing a fine blue sheen. The sharpness, POV, and composition against a natural grassy BG are excellent.
Thanks and kind regards,

Hello Anna,

WOW!!! What a really nice shot of this unknown (for me ;-) ) stork!!! You managed very well the hard light to bring to us the very colorful feathers of the bird. It acts like our Great Heron, getting a sun bathing.

Nicely done with these diffult light conditions...

Merhaba Anna,
Tebrik ediyorum. Yeni fotolarda görüşmek üzere...
En iyi dileklerimle.
