Last one, for now, from the Wonderkoppie ("Mystery Hill"). The bluish marble behaved like dough and the more competent layers of calc-silicate rock were contorted during the structural deformation that took place approximately 1200 million years ago. Width of the image is between one and two metres.

UPDATE: Yes, 1200 million (1.2 billion) years ago is correct. The structural deformation and metamorphism occurred during the Namaqua-Natal event of orogenesis (mountain building) and ultrametamorphism which, as the name suggests, affected South Africa from Namaqualand in the west to KwaZulu Natal in the east when three continents collided. The oldest rocks on Earth are nearly 4 000 million (4 billion) years old with rocks in the Barberton Mountainland and in the Limpopo Mobile Belt in Limpopo Province (South Africa) amongst them. In fact, rocks with an age of 4200 million years have now been found.

Note: More information on the history of this accompanies the upload just before this one.

Besondere klip, goed opgemerk.

Incredible story and photograph once again Neels! 120 000 000 or 1 200 000 000 years ago is my question? Never the less this sounds incredible, may be those rocks are amongst the oldest exposed rocks on earth!
Perfect composition and superb colors indeed! Bravo Neels!

George Veltchev

Hello Neels,

An interesting and different image, accompanied by a fine note!
The rock is captured with good texture, fine details and colour reproduction...
The patterns in the rock really open for an imaginary flight!

Hello Neels,
An amazing ancient rock formation well captured to contrast of the silicate folds embedded in the limestone with fine natural colours and sharpness. I wonder if the bluish tinge of this ancient limestone is due to a copper content?
The patterns make a nice composition.
Thanks and kind regards,
Ivan

exciting geological pic, TFS Ori

Good selection of rock details to present an interesting phase of metamorphal stages of the planet earth, Neels. The composition is attractive with the right degree of exposure.
Thanks.
Ram

Fascinating. I like this "found art" in nature.
Cheers
John
