Hadeda Ibis / Bostrychia hagedash

The Hadeda Ibis which was photographed at the Sweni Bird Hide in the Satara area is number 44 in the series of the birds of the Kruger National Park which I am still sharing. Enjoy!

General overview
A noisy and distinctive large bird, with a long down-curved bill. Size ±76cm, somewhat larger than a Guinea fowl.

Hadedas are greyish or grey-brown birds with blackish wing and tail feathers. In certain light, an attractive metallic purple, pink or greenish sheen is visible on the wing coverts. The bill is blackish, with a red line on the top of the upper bill. The legs and feet are grey, with a line of red scales running down the front of the legs and the tops of the toes.

Hadedas are very well known in the urban areas, due mainly to their very loud, raucous calls which are usually given on take off or in flight. They are common and familiar birds of gardens, sports fields and parks in the urban areas, and are also found in woodland, forest and grasslands. They usually occur in pairs or small groups, but in the non-breeding season often gather in larger numbers to feed, or at roost sites, where it can be very noisy.

The call is a loud, raucous Hah-hah-hah de-dah, uttered from a perch, or while in flight.

Hadedas feed on insects, worms, spiders. crustaceans, small reptiles and snails. Prey is located by probing the sensitive bill into soft ground.

Monogamous, solitary nester, probably with a life-long pair bond. They nests mainly in late winter and early summer. The nest is a flimsy platform of sticks, lined with grass and lichens. It is usually situated on the horizontal branch of a large tree. The nest is probably built solely by the female in less than two weeks, rarely up to a month. Egg-laying season is from June-March, peaking from September-November. It lays 1-5 eggs, which are incubated by both sexes for about 25-28 days in shifts up to 3 hours. The chicks are fed by both parents by regurgitation and brooded constantly for the first week and less frequently thereafter. The chick leaves the nest at about 33-40 days old, becoming fully independent at roughly 60 days old. Source

I hope you enjoyed looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

Hello Anna,
A very fine portrait of the Hadeda Ibis.
The POV is ideal to show pretty well all its features, which you did with excellent sharpness and natural colours.
The BG is busy but an interesting mixture of small green plants, rocks and lichens with the Ibis showing well against it in this pleasing composition.
Thanks and have a great weekend,

Hello Anna,
I have been wondering why one does not see any images of Hadedahs here and thinking that for some or other reason they may not be popular. So this upload by you is very welcome for me. I have some images of them too and will upload one, albeit not of the same quality as yours. Will then also elaborate on the change in their behaviour that I have noticed over the last few years. They really are unusual and beautiful birds, looking as though they may be close descendants of the pterodactyls ( :)), and this is an excellent photo with a very informative note. Thank you and best wishes.

congratulations for the picture Anna !
very interesting bird, very interesting info,
funny bird with good details,
I find the compo good,
have a good time,

ciao, tino

Hello Anna,
A beautifully shown Hadeda Ibis, who I assume is searching for dinner. The bird is shown with excellent detail and gorgeous natural colors. The BG is certainly an added bonus to the overall attractiveness of this image. Those tiny little plants allow us to focus on the bird yet enjoy the entire colorful frame. Well done!!
