Despite its name, the waterbuck is not truly aquatic nor as much at home in water and swamps as is the sitatunga or lechwe. It does, however, take refuge there to escape predators.

The waterbuck is a large, robust animal; males are generally about 25 percent larger than the females. Waterbucks have large, rounded ears and white patches above the eyes, around the nose and mouth and on the throat. Only the males have horns, which are prominently ringed and as long as 40 inches. The horns are widely spaced and curve gracefully back and up. They are sometimes used with lethal results when males fight one another over territories.

The waterbuck has a shaggy brown-gray coat that emits a smelly, oily secretion thought to be for waterproofing. In East Africa two types occur, the common waterbuck and the defassa waterbuck, distinguished only by the white pattern on the rump. The common waterbuck has a conspicuous white ring encircling a dark rump, while the defassa has wide white patches on either side of the rump. Only male waterbucks have horns.

Image taken in RAW, ISO800, Aperture priority mode and Evaluative metering system.

Hello George,
Very nice image with a lovely mammal. Superb horns and the colors are natural.
Excellent clarity and sharpness.
Thanks for sharing!

Hello George,
As with your Impala image, the natural environment here makes a BIG difference over a shot that looks posed and with no connection to its habitat. This is just beautiful and I love it! Well done beyond the technical quality. A sheer pleasure to view.

Hello George, another great capture perfectly in line with the high quality of your shots, another image to be framed. Thank you for the correct identification of my Coenonympha Pamphilus. A greeting and thanks, Paul

Hello George,
Beautiful image of this waterbuck. I like the way you almost frame the animal with the surrounding bush. Great DOF. Well done and TFS.

Hello dear friend George!
What did you do here? seems that the focus is concentrated only in the center of the photo...Never mind! I love it! Your waterbuck is very majestic!
Best wishes,

PS: did you see my "beautiful" music in FB?

In fact I envy (envy healthy, of course my friend!) you can have these wonderful animals to photograph, thank you very much for sharing with us! ... This photo is sublime, mainly because the bit of backlight, which generates an "aura" in red tone of the animal's fur. Excellent work, very dynamic lighting.
