Silver Sugarbush / Protea caffra

This lovely Silver Sugarbush Protea was photographed in the Oribi Gorge valley, when Loot and I spent some time exploring the South Coast and surrounding areas. It was a cold and windy day and at first I did not really feel like getting out of the car to photograph the flower that we saw in the field. I am glad I defied the chilly breeze for a few minutes, rather than to stay in the warmth of the car, otherwise I would have missed out on photographing this beautiful flower.

In only 8 days we will be departing on a 3½ week vacation to the beautiful Cape Province and I am sure, I will return with a load of images with flowers galore and many more which I will gladly share in the future.

The genus is named for the Greek sea-god Proteus who, according to the myth, could change into many different shapes. The name refers to the great diversity within the genus. The specific name derives from an old name for eastern and central regions of South Africa, Kaffraria, where the plant originates.

The common sugar bush is one of three proteas which occur in the Witwatersrand area. It is the most widely distributed protea in South Africa and may be found in grassland and woodland throughout Gauteng, in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Lesotho, Northern Province, Mpumalanga, the Eastern Cape as far south as the Katberg mountains and in Zimbabwe. It is usually found growing in large colonies especially on rocky ridges.

It grows as a shrub or small tree with a somewhat rounded crown. The grey-green leaves are elongated with nearly parallel sides. They are leathery in texture and may be up to 250mm in length.

The flower heads (which may be mistaken for individual flowers) can be borne singly or in clusters. They reach up to 80mm in diameter with the outer bracts (resembling petals) varying from reddish to pink or cream in colour. Many tiny, single flowers are clustered together in the flower head. When pollinated each flower forms a small nut which is covered in rich reddish brown hairs.

The thick bark has a chunky, corky texture. It protects the mature plant from the fires that are essential to the maintenance of the grasslands in which the common sugar bushes grow. Caterpillars of Capys penningtoni (Pennington's protea) and Capys disjunctus butterflies feed on the flower buds. The copious nectar (from which the plant derives its common name - sugarbush) attracts birds and insects such as beetles which pollinate the flowers. Source

I hope you enjoyed looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

Hello Anna,
This is a very unusual yet interesting flower that you have posted. I too am glad that you decided to get away from the warmth of the car and venture out to photograph it.
I can't think of anything I've seen here that even compares to this pretty bloom. It's petals look like they are fairly sturdy and have a waxy sheen to them. It also seems to be filled with many long stamen.
You have captured it perfectly with wonderful detail and bright vivid coloration. Exposure looks just right and the close crop really lets us get a great view of it's unique features. Well done!!
Ron

Hi Anna!
Wonderful image of Protea. Fantastic brightness and splendid vivid colours. It is really a joy for the eyes.
I know the King Protea (Protea cynaroides). In Italy we can find it in stores. I read that King Protea is the National Flower of South Africa: is it right?
My warmest regards and TFS.
Ciao! Vanda
