BLUE-BELLIED ROLLER - Coracias cyanogaster

Physical Characteristics: The blue-bellied roller is very striking in appearance. The feathers on its head, neck, and breast are buff in color, and it has a slightly curved black beak. The feathers along its back are dark green, while the rest of its plumage contains various shades of blue. Full grown, these birds will get approximately 11 inches from head to tail with a 14 inch wingspan.

Habitat: Blue-bellied rollers can be found in a narrow strip along western Africa from Senegal to Sudan. They reside in a variety of habitats including grasslands, wooded savannahs, and forest glades along marshes and streams.

Diet: These birds feed on insects, lizards, and other small animals.

Did you know? The name "roller" comes from the blue-bellied roller's habit of rolling in the air during courtship and territorial flights. They are extremely acrobatic fliers. They are in the same order (Coraciiformes) as kingfishers and hornbills.

Status: The blue-bellied rollers is considered non-threatened and has adjusted well to human settlement.

Amazingly close shot with equally sharp FG & smeared BG. Vest portraits of small birds are usually uncommon. More so, at this clarity of shiny beak, sun sparkled eye & vivid plumage, with a couple of ruffled straws at the back.
