Wood Sandpiper / Tringa glareola

Today I share number 58 in the series of birds of the Kruger National Park, the Wood Sandpiper. I very much like this bird's stylish and neat appearance, and it reminds me so much of a soldier walking up and down, to and throw, all rigid and with a sense of superiority.

This species is a full migrant, travelling overland on a broad front across Europe and the Middle East. The adults start to move away from the breeding grounds in late June, with juveniles following in late August, arriving in tropical Africa from late July through August to October. On this southern migration many birds frequent stop-over sites to the north of the Mediterranean (especially in France and Italy), after which they fly over the Sahara.

Spring departure from the wintering grounds begins in late March to early April, with breeding areas starting to be reoccupied from late April (early June in northern Russia) and with breeding occurring between May and mid July Some non-breeding birds may also remain in the south throughout the summer. The species nests in well-dispersed solitary pairs but in winter it may occur in small scattered groups or larger flocks (20-50 individuals), and concentrations can exceed 1,000 individuals on migration.

During the breeding season this species inhabits open, swampy areas in boreal forest, scrubland between tundra and coniferous forest with willow, dwarf birch or spruce, wet heath lands, and extensive mossy, sedge or grassy marshes.

Outside the breeding season this species is less associated with woodlands, being more commonly found in open areas such as the margins of inland freshwater lakes and reservoirs, muddy marshlands, grassy stream banks, sewage farms, wet paddy fields, small temporary pools, permanent swamps, flooded grassland and irrigation channels. It rarely occurs in coastal habitats, but may be found along the creeks of salt marshes and mangrove swamps.

Whilst on the breeding grounds this species is chiefly carnivorous, taking small insects, especially beetles, Hemiptera and the larvae of Diptera such as midges. During the non-breeding season the species has a more varied diet consisting of aquatic and terrestrial insects and their larvae, worms, spiders, crustaceans, gastropod molluscs, small fish and frogs, as well as plant matter such as seeds.

The nest is a scrape on the ground amongst dense vegetation, or raised on a tussock or slight ridge, and can sometimes be surrounded by water. The species may also nest in trees in the abandoned nests of other species such as thrushes.

The species is threatened in some European countries (such as Finland) from exploitation, and peat land drainage and destruction for forestry and agriculture. The populations in southern Sweden, Germany and Poland have also declined, possibly due to the threats of climatic change. The species is susceptible to both avian botulism and avian malaria, so may be threatened by future outbreaks of these diseases. Source

I hope you enjoyed looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

I like all aspects of this photo of the wood Sandpiper, especially the lighting and contrast with the calm water BG against which it is seen with almost three dimensional clarity from a perfect POV.

Hello Anna,
A very pretty shorebird and captured so nicely by your lens. I can definitely see what you are talking about as far as reminding you of a soldier walking. It appears to have a rigid and stately posture with head held high.
It has a very beautiful plumage which is quite camouflaged at the same time. I suppose it would be very difficult for predators to see when standing still among the reeds and boulders.
White balance looks perfect with beautiful natural colors. Well done!!
Ron

Hello Anna,

You're capturing well this bird by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the sandpiper with slim body, beautiful color, the body of the spotty pattern of brown and white, and a long beak/leg. The whole is balanced beautifully by a good arrangement and fike color combinations. The reflection projected to the water draws out an additional good effect in this image. And then, useful note. Have a nice weekend!

Kind regards,
mikio
