Three-banded Plover / Charadrius tricollaris

Today I share number 59 in the series of birds of the Kruger National Park, the Three-banded Plover. This beautiful little bird has been featured many times on the gallery, by various members, from all over the world, but my series will be incomplete if I do not share it too. Beside Loot and me, members like Annick Vanderschelden, Paul Bright and Robin Du Bois also shared photographs of the Three-banded Plover taken at different dams in the Kruger National Park. This image was taken at the Sunset Dam close to the Lower Sabie rest camp.

Distribution and habitat
Occurs in Madagascar and sub-Saharan Africa, in Nigeria as well as in the area from Ethiopia south through Uganda, Tanzania, southern DRC, Zambia and Angola to southern Africa. Within southern Africa it is common across much of the region, largely excluding arid south-central Botswana, generally preferring open shores of any freshwater habitat, such as pools, streams, seeps, farm dams and sewage works.

Movements and migrations
Little known, although often moving away on the onset of seasonal rainfall at Zambia and Zimbabwe, while it travels away from arid areas at the beginning of the dry season.

It mainly eats invertebrates (both terrestrial and aquatic), doing most of its foraging on open shores using the typical plover technique, running, stopping and searching for prey then repeating the process. The following food items have been recorded in its diet: insects, beetles, fly larvae, worms, crustaceans and small molluscs.

Monogamous, territorial solitary nester, defending its territory by running or flying at intruders, which can be another Three-banded Plover or a different species. The nest is a simple scrape in sand, shingle or dry mud, often lined with dried bits of material, dried mud or pebbles and typically placed close to the water.

Egg-laying season is almost year-round, often peaking from July-December. It lays 1-2 eggs, which are incubated by both sexes for about 26-28 days, as the male defends the territory by day while the female incubates, then switching places at night so that the female can feed. The chicks are brooded frequently at first; taking their first flight at about 21-22 days and can fly strongly 9-10 days later. They may remain with their parents up to about 40-42 days old.

Not threatened, in fact it is generally tolerant of disturbance, and has benefited from the construction of artificial water bodies.

Hello Anna,

It is a very cute bird, this plover, very colorful, they are different kind of plover along the beach here, but not as colorful like this one, especially around the eye and the beak in orange red, very bright with the dot of pupil staring right at the camera it seem, makes it very engaging and it seem to have a personality. Wonderful details of the bird with lovely color and texture of the plumage and the natural environment as well. Thanks Anna.

Have a good evening.

Hi Anna,
Wonderful shot, gorgeous exposure and sharpness. Fantastic shot supported with a great note, as always from you. About the composition: I might cut the green line from the bottom, but otherwise very pleasant to the eyes. Congratulations!
Best regards, Lszl

Hello Anna,
a clear and sharp picture with exact focus.
The difficult 'turbulent' background with colours similar to those of the bird does not
distract to much - due to the excellent focus and sharpness of the desired 'object'.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Anna,
What a beauty! The light and colours in this photo are splendid. Taken from a very good low POV in excellent sharpness and details. The blue water in the background is a bit too present IMO. A little bit of blurring can do a lot here. But the bird is fantastic.

Hello Anna,
Your Three-banded Plover is certainly a beautiful bird with it's deep orangish eye rind, orange legs, red bill and black white and brownish plumage. It reminds me a lot of our Killdeer which is another type of plover.
I read your notes and was curious as to weather this particular bird does the old broken wing act when protecting it's nest. Our Killdeer are known for this antic like behavior and will try and draw predators or even people away from their eggs by allowing one wing to droop as if it is broken. Once they get you to follow them away from the nesting area they take flight.
