Daum's Reef Lobster / Enoplometopus daumi

Today, is the 6th year that I am a part of the Trek Nature community, and although I cannot participate as much as in the past, I still enjoy it very much to be part of this wonderful site. I have completed 6 years of ever memorable friendship with my Trek Nature friends. I think the best gift I could ever receive is if the older members return to the site. It will give not only me but lots of fellow members great joy.

Thank you my friends for making this place so special, and for showing me all the beauty of our world right in the comfort of my own home. I have to thank all of you as it is too difficult to choose or favour one over the other.

I am sure the most of you knows that I am very fond of the colour purple. No matter if the tint is violet, lilac, lavender, periwinkle, grape, plum or mauve. Any shade of purple makes me joyful and I want to thank everybody that unknowingly spoils my eyes and heart by placing an image containing the colour purple.

As I celebrated all my other birthdays with something purple, today's cannot be different and once again I want to share an image containing this beautiful colour, this time not by ways of a flower, but a creature from the ocean the Daum's Reef Lobster which I captured at the Two Oceans Aquarium during our 2011 holiday.

Daum's Reef Lobster is also called a Striped Reef Lobster or Purple Reef Lobster. It is found in the Indo-West Pacific oceans where it inhabits shallow coral reefs. It is a secretive species, rarely seen by divers. It is relatively small with a maximum length of 10cm with a generally peaceful disposition, but it is very territorial and aggressive towards other Reef Lobsters.

Justification
Enoplometopus daumi has been assessed as Data Deficient. It is known from Indonesia and the Philippines and inhabits shallow coral reefs. This is a highly prized species in the aquarium trade industry; however no regulations are in place to manage the collection of wild specimens. No catch data for this species is available, and it is not considered to be common. Furthermore, coral reefs in both Indonesia and the Philippines are under high levels of stress and habitat degradation in combination with fishing pressure might cause declines in this species population numbers. Further research is required to establish its population size, and the potential effects of harvesting and habitat degradation on this species' population.

Geographic Range
This species is found in the Indo-West Pacific Ocean (Chan and Ng 2008). It is known from Indonesia and the Philippines.

Habitat and Ecology
This species is found on shallow coral reefs at depths of 0-1m (Chan 1998, Poupin 2002). It is considered to be shy and is often found hiding in rock cavities (Holthuis 1983, Chan 1998).

Conservation status
There are no species-specific conservation measures in place for this species. Only a few countries have implemented regulations on the collection of ornamental decapods and further research is needed to improve our understanding of species' reproductive biology, growth, and population structure to ensure that appropriate conservation measures can be put in place. No catch data for this species is available; it should be noted this species is not considered to be common (Chan 1998). Further research is required to establish its population size and the potential effects of harvesting on this species' population. Furthermore, conservation measures should be put in place to protect this species' habitat. Coral reefs in both Indonesia and the Philippines are under high levels of stress, degradation, and fishing pressure; which increases the possibility of a decline in this species population numbers. I hope you enjoyed looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

Hello Anna,
Congratulations on your 6th. birthday here on TN. It's been a pleasure getting to know you through your many wonderful images as well as your emails from time to time. I'm certainly glad your love of purple drew you to this beautiful little specimen. You have photographed it perfectly, capturing it's unique features and gorgeous colors.
I would have commented on it sooner, but our family has had a terrible bout of the flu, and for the last two and a half weeks I haven't even felt like getting on the computer. Great job as always!!
God Bless,
Ron

Hi Anna,
I hope everything's ok with you and Loot and both of you will return to the site soon. Beautiful underwater birthday image, sharp with excellent exposure / colors and great contrast between the bright subject / foreground and the dark blue background. Spectacular shot, congratulations! And I hope for your next (8th already) TN birthday you again post something purple.
Best regards, László
