Cheetah / Acinonyx jubatus

We were fortunate to take a short vacation in the Kruger National Park which we have not visited in two years, as we spend our last holidays in the beautiful Cape Province.

We normally visit the park in October and therefore we were looking forward to see the difference in animal, bird and habitat in a different season. Afterwards, both Loot and I felt that if we visit the park in the future we would once again do so in October as we did not see as much in April as we are used to see in October. The grass was too long and the trees too dense in foliage, especially so after the heavy rains the Kruger Park received during the summer months.

I was really looking forward to capture a cheetah while on holiday as it evaded us the previous time. I was really hoping to find a cheetah more so than to find a leopard, and I was very excited that we met with 2 of these beautiful cats. Although it was just a short period of time that they were visible, I could only take 4 quick photographs and share one of it with you today.

Since cheetahs have featured many times on the site and much has been said about this beautiful animal, I am not going to share any information regarding their specific biology, but just want you to enjoy the sight of this lovely animal and all its striking features. This specific photo was taken in the Lower Sabie area.

Of the other cats that we saw during this trip there were quite a number of Lions, one Leopard which was very far away, an African (black-footed) Wildcat, but unfortunately I have no photographs of it, and a Caracal with a kitten of which I managed to get one shot where it was hiding between the grasses.

I hope you enjoyed looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

Bonjour Anna,
Incroyable rencontre !!!

GREAT IMAGE QUALITY.......

Hello Anna,

Hello Anna,
Beautiful and majestic pose.Very well captured this Cheetah.Excellent details, mainly black dots are looking nice.Well managed BG light also.Good work.

But little bit anxious after listening that you didn't see much animals at KNP which you use to see in October. On 25th May,2014 we will enter(after visiting Graskop area 5 Days) KNP and will stay till 9th May 2014 in Orpen,Skukuza and Pretoriuscop area.Have you done Sunrise Bush Walk/Sunset Bush Walk?I have decided to do that in Skukuza. Can you tell me as a Foreigner,a "WILD CARD" would be better or not?

Thanks for sharing such excellent natural habitat picture,
Regards and have a nice time,
Srikumar

Glad you enjoyed your holiday, Anna. This portrait of cheetah is superb. Looks like posing for you; but ... your great merit is that it did not pose for you; and all who are dedicated to know the nature photography; how difficult is a free capture; Full body; of a wild animal.
Thank you; also; to see this "cat-Greyhound" (as I call it) in an environment where the vegetation is green and plentiful. Accustomed to arid savannas where we see in the documentary ...
Congratulations on this "great hunt" Ms. Great White Hunter: ha ha ha!

A big hug,

Hernán Bortondello

Awesome image Anna,
I am always marveled by the variety of animals that I often see posted from Africa. As a young boy I had dreams of going there someday to view all the wildlife in their natural habitat.

This Cheetah is such a gorgeous specimen, and you have done a superb job of capturing it's likeness with your lens. Your beautiful photo looks like it could have come out of the pages of National Geographic magazine. Perfectly exposed and displaying exceptional detail and natural colors. Did you notice the tiny red flower petal hidden near the cheetahs back right rear paw?
Ron

Hello Anna

Excellent close-up photo of the Cheetah,
with a very fine POV a little bit lower

Hi Anna,
Although you didn't see so many animals, this one alone worth all the effort. Not only a fantastic memory, but an exceptional image also. Very well composed, sharp, colors are great and beautifully framed. Top class image, and an interesting personal note as always from you. Excellent post! Congratulations.

Hi Anna, Great close up of one of Africa's coolest cats. I managed to photograph some while in Tanzania but they were too lazy that day and wouldn't stand up so I could not get any good shots, maybe next time? Say hi to Loot for me:)

Beautiful shot Anna.
Your timing was much better than mine with this image. Mines mouth was still closed. Great composition, good natural colour, nice sharp detail and well balanced contrast makes this one a special to view the beauty of this animal. It even gave you an excellent pose although I remember it was just for a very fleeting moment.
Well done and thanks for sharing.
Regards
Loot
