[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The 23rd and final in the series under the title FROM ICE TO FIRE - A 200 MILLION YEAR JOURNEY BETWEEN TWO DESERTS. To follow the whole story, one would have to start with Image 1.

It is still the year 183 million before present. A continental flood basalt (CFB) event ensues and many millions of cubic kilometres of dark magma pour out from fissures onto the light-coloured aeolian desert deposits in only a few million years. The whole of Southern Africa, including Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, is dominated by volcanic activity. A thick column of basalt quickly accumulates of which the original thickness is unknown as some of it has subsequently been eroded away. The maximum preserved thickness is at least 1650 metres. This is the prelude, during the early Jurassic Period, to the fragmentation of Gondwana which would split up into the landmasses of the southern hemisphere and India.

The 200 million-year journey, starting with an ice desert and moving through progressively warmer and more arid environments, ends with the termination of sedimentary deposition by the domination of volcanic activity.

I wish to thank all of you who viewed these images and especially those who left their comments. It has been fun and TN served as a testing ground to determine whether this series might have merit enough to be converted into a roadside geology guide and, ultimately, into a fully-fledged book on the evolutionary history of the Karoo Supergroup of geological formations which is world famous for its unbroken fossil record of the evolution of mammal-like reptiles.

Een prachtige serie komt ten einde. Onvoorstelbaar knap hoe je steeds je tekst hebt begeleid met de passende foto. Persoonlijk vind ik dit ook nog eens een van je beste en mooiste foto's in de serie.

I was fortunate to see some of your latest work backed by an interesting information, and I must say that I like your series and even your photos with small exceptions. The unfortunate element here is that the popularity of Treknature has slipped beyond recognition lately as expected and in my view our efforts remains somewhat underrated ........ just a thought
