[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The horizontally bedded sedimentary strata were deposited during the Early-Triassic period from about 250 million years ago. By 180 MYA they were buried deep underground by overlying strata when magma, in a dilatational regime, moved up from the Mantle of the Earth along fissures to extrude as lava flows on the surface which was still higher up. Vertical dykes of dolerite were formed where the magma solidified on its way up to the surface. The crest of the hill, now exposed at the present-day surface, is such a vertical dyke that cuts across the horizontal strata. The dolerite is more resistant to weathering and erosion, hence the positive topographic feature.

PS: I have re-posted this image in response to valid comments by Laszlo and Ron that the sky had somewhat of a cyan tinge to it. I think it is better now. Anyway, I thank them for their comments which otherwise were very positive.

27 February 2015: It seems most members do not really understand what is shown here, probably because they do not attentively read the note, which is a pity as this is one of the most fantastic exposures of its kind that I have ever seen - textbook quality indeed..

Hello Neels,
Now this is more like it. Great job!!
I tried and tried to come up with this natural color in Picasa, but couldn't get it quite right. Not sure what program you used, but this is perfect:)
