Great White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotacus)
The sexes are similar with white plumage an long bill and neck. During the breeding season forehead swells knob-like, plumage is tinged pink and has a yellowish breast patch
Status: Locally fairly common resident, sedentary at some sites.Gregarious, spends about 25% of the day fishing.
Listed as near threatened.
Habitat: Shallow lakes, estuaries, large pans and dams.
Food: Mainly fish, shrimps and sometimes scavenges offal. |
