[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I captured this Glossy Ibis in the World of birds outside Houtbay and I absolutely love the colors on this one. As you can see from my previous posts, portraits, better known as mug-shots are close to my heart and this one is no different.

One of the reasons for liking portraits is that it adds emotion to the subject as the eye is clearly visible and as we know, the eye is the window to what is inside a person. Take the eye of a buffalo, lion or owl and compare it to that of the Red-Eyed dove – the emotion captured is totally different.

Enough of being philosophical, here is more info on the
Glossy Ibis (Roberts ID - 93)

A small, slender ibis with a long curved bill. Size 55-65 cm - larger (longer) than a Guineafowl, but this is a slender bird with a very long bill. Afrikaans: Glansibis

Adult Glossy Ibises have the head, neck, back and underparts a rich chestnut-brown. The wings are blackish with a metallic green sheen on the 'shoulders'. There is white stripe from the base of the bill to above the eye. Immature birds are drabber, more sooty-brown, than adults -with greyish streaking on the head and neck.

The bill, legs and feet are greenish-brown. The Glossy Ibis is a more slender, longer-billed bird than the Hadeda Ibis. That bill of that bird also is more tapered, with a broader base.

The Glossy Ibis is a bird of wetlands, marshes, muddy lake-shores and flooded grassland. It usually occurs in small flocks but can gather in larger groups where food is abundant. It does not visit gardens and parks like the Hadedah.

Glossy Ibises have benefited from human activities and around Gauteng have increased dramatically in numbers thanks to the man-made marshes and vleis in the area

Glossy Ibis eat insects, crustaceans, worms, molluscs, fish, frogs and small reptiles.

Breeding occurs during the summer months. The nest is a compact platform of twigs or reeds, situated in a tree, bush or reedbed. It is a colonial nester, often nesting together in mixed heronries with other species.

It is found on the Atlantic coast of North America and the West Indies. Also South Europe, Africa, Madagascar, Central and South Asia, the Philippines and then south through Indonesia to Australia.

A very nice close-up portrait here.
Nice colors, Sharpness and lot's of details.
A great shot you did, i like this composition which one reveal all about this long curved nozzle. Well done!

What a wonderful picture. I love the way the long bill draws the eye up from the bottom left to the top of the head and down the neck and up towards the back, like a zig-zag shape right across the frame. The background is a great neutral colour to show off the wonderful wine red colour of the bird's feathers. The idea of a portrait is great as it really "shows off" this fine bird.
