Crowned Crane / Mahem (Balearica regulorum)

This is a very large bird measuring about 105cm. Iris white to pale grey with black bill, legs and feet. It has a spiky straw-coloured crest , grey body and large white wing patch. Head is mainly velvety black with white cheeks and red wattles.

Distribution: South Africa (N, NE, and SE.), Kenya and Uganda.

Habitat: Marshes, vleis and moist grasslands.

Food: Frogs, reptiles, insects and fallen grain.

I took this image in the Krugersdorp Private Game Reserve.

One of my favourite birds in the world, from 20 feet away...:) Seeing this bird is like looking at ships , if you want it pretty keep some distance, in detail could be ugly... But not after your photo, great , ensibile detail... Great work!

Absolutely great detail and sharpness. I really like this as it shows all the dimples on the crane's face. Good Comp, POV and an excellent photo all round. TFS, Sheriff

This is very sharp and well composed. Great exposure control showing all that details in the whites. These critter I find very difficult to expose correctly. Very well done.
