Can anyone help identify this butterfly. The wings are dark grey on the inside and a white lining on the edges with one blueish/purple spot on each wing. Only saw this once and then the bugger flew away. Butterfly is very small, stands about 15mm tall.

Nice shot!
It's a Lycaenidae. The specie is a Cacyreus marshalli (Butler, 1898).
Known as Geranium Bronze in english.
Nice POV and BG!

Nice macro Jannie, love the contrast of the browns against the green background. Unfortunately I can't help with the name. but great composition. Regards, Dean.

Nice macro! Well composed and framed, and now, with Paulo Henrique's help, we have also a name for this small jewel.

Nice shot Jannie!

Well exposed, and shallow DOF brings all attention on the main subject. Composition is well balanced, leavint more room in front of your subject than behind.

Good work and TFS.

Great close-up. Good POV and the OOF background is very well used to accentuate the subject. Well done.

Jannie, I have the feeling that the shot could a little bit sharper, but it's just an opinion.

Apart from that, a lovely image with great contrast, very nice bg and composition.

I like colors and saturation too.

Very good.
Thank you, Jannie.
Sorry, I have no time these days to write complete comments.

Common Geranium Bronze (Cacyreus marshalli) but very similar to C. palemon. so I am not 100% sure.

Your enemy here in this capture is DOF. Set the camera to AV setting and adjust the F-stop to F8, always try and shoot at this setting when you shoot small insects this close. I see yo ushot this at ISO64. Your camera can easily handle ISO100 without any noise. It will give you extra shuttersped or DOF when you shoot at ISO100.

One last thing... Try and take the shot "broad sided" it gives you less DOF to worry about and most of it will be sharp. Even with a proper macro lens this POV is very difficult to get the whole insect in the DOF.

Hope it helps.

Hello Jannie, nice shot. The composition is good and nice colours with a blurred background. The butterfly itself is a little soft in focus - it's always good to get the eyes in focus.

Good post, a little soft in areas, technically the purple flower behind is there, but hell, it still works due to the DOF. Nicely presented.

Hello Jannie,
They have been imported with the Geraniums from South Africa to Europe and spread from the south of Europe to the more northern parts like the Netherlands. Dutch name is Geraniumblauwtje.
